Not one.Not two.Not.....,but six Grammy awards.
This is how many Grammys Adele - the British singer and songwriter - won during this year's Grammy Awards Ceremony that took place last weekend.

We are in awe of Adele's achievement,ladies and gentlemen.

For the record,she won Grammys for Album of the Year('21'),Best Pop Vocal Album('21'),Song of the Year('Rolling in the Deep'),Record of the Year('Rolling in the Deep'),Best Pop Solo Performance('Someone like You'),and Best Form Music Video('Rolling in the Deep').This big win(of 6 Grammys in one year by a female artist) was previously only matched by Beyonce`.

For one so young(only 23 years of age),Adele's haul is remarkable.It makes one look back on one's life to try and remember what one had achieved by age 23.And it wasn't much.

Her Grammys' win coming - as it does - on the back of an operation on her throat,late last year,that was carried out to prevent her from losing her voice.This show of love by the Grammys' community could not have come at a better time for someone still recovering from the effects of that surgery.

The snide comments and jibes about her weight no longer matter now.Adele has shut up the owners of these the best way she can.She has shown that if you are gifted and you use that gift well,armchair critics cannot affect you.They will remain just that - armchair critics.

Zambia Not Reading the Script

These guys clearly did not read the script.
We are talking about the 'Chipolopolo'.The Zambian national soccer team,in other words.From their apple cart upsetting performance this past Wednesday night,this team knew nothing about scripts.By beating big tournament favourites - Ghana - by one goal to zero in an AFCON(Africa Cup of Nations Cup) semifinal game,they could not have seen it.The script,that is.

For their benefit,here is how the script was written.On Wednesday,before the start of the two AFCON semifinal games of Zambia vs Ghana and Mali vs Ivory Coast,the script read:Ghana to beat Zambia and Ivory Coast to beat Mali.Then Ghana and Ivory Coast to meet in the Final today(Sunday 12th).

But the writers of this play,it seems,forgot to tell the 'Chipolopolo' about this sequence of scenes.Because on Wednesday night this Zambian team played their hearts out.They played as if their very lives depended on a win.

With some luck they survived a Ghanaian onslaught in the first half.Their goalkeeper - Kennedy Mweene - playing a starring role in saving an Asamoah Gyan penalty early in the half.In the second half their shaky defense had been tightened.Also,in this half their fortunes in front of goal changed.Their winning goal by - Emmanuel Mayuka - came in this half.

We say 'ke tsona' to Chipolopolo.We say 'big up' for keeping alive the hopes of Southern Africa for the AFCON trophy to come our way in tonight's Final against Ivory Coast.

Once again though,the script about what should happen in tonight's Final is being circulated.Ivory Coast should be crowned champions of Africa this evening,it says.Our advice to Chipolopolo is simple.When this script is given to you,tear it up.Write your own instead.

"Do it for the 1993 plane crash squad,Chipolopolo!"

Haalala SABC!

In one swift stroke we moved from getting what looked like bread crumbs,to eating the main dish itself.

This was the life of the public broadcaster (SABC TV) viewers as far as the Afcon(Africa Cup of Nations) soccer games were concerned.

When the Afcon tournament started two weeks ago we(of the SABC,translated as those without the pay station - DSTV) were not shown even the opening ceremony.We did catch the first game(Equatorial Guinea vs Libya) live though.But after this game it was all downhill.The second game - Senegal vs Zambia- played on the same day went out as 'delayed live',an expression which is a euphimism for 'not really live'.'Canned' in other words.

On the second day of the tournament - Sunday - we may have seen one live game.I don't actually remember.Nor do I care to.

From Monday to Friday there was a complete black out of live Afcon games.The 'delayed lives' were moved to between 12 midnight and 4am.These games were clearly meant for insomniacs.No sane person will wait to watch a game at 1am,no matter how interesting the game was.Also,by this time most people would know the results of these games in any case.

In the meantime,the pay station was going to town in covering the Afcon games.This coverage was wall to wall.The pay station made hay while the public broadcaster snoozed,so to speak.

And us poor SABC TV viewers,we wondered what we had done to deserve our shoddy treatment.Admittedly,our national soccer team - Bafana Bafana - was not at this Afcon.We wondered if this was perhaps the reason why the SABC thought less of this tournament(and of its viewers as a consequence).

Then suddenly - and out of the blue - on Friday (27th Feb) there was a item in the SABC evening news to the effect that from tomorrow(Saturday 28th) all Afcon games were going to be shown live on SABC TV.Not really believing this, we decided not to get excited.We were going to believe it when we see it,tomorrow.

Indeed on Saturday this proved to be the case,ladies and gentlemen.Both the 6pm and 8pm games were shown live on SABC's channel 1.And not only this,the next day(Sunday 29th) when the two last games in Group A were being played simultaneously at 8pm,the SABC distributed them between two channels(1 & 2).Normally one game thought to be of high interest to its viewers would have been shown,instead of the two games being shown live together.This 'double live' at 8pm was to continue on Monday(30th),Tuesday(31st) and Wednesday(1st Feb) for the last games in Groups B,C and D respectively.

Us of the SABC were in soccer heaven,needless to say.From scraping the bottom of the 'live Afcon games' pot,we were now up there with the best.We had arrived.

Dreams Do Come True

Here we are at last!

Let me start by first apologizing.I apologize for not posting anything on the blog since the beginning of 2012.

The truth of the matter is that I have been busy putting the final touches to the manuscript of our compilation book of the best FGM blog posts from 2011.Things have been so hectic that I could not even take 3 hours(or so) away from the book project in order to do a blog post.

In this first post of 2012 I would also like to take the opportunity to announce some changes to the FGM blog.The first change has to do with our 'feel good' quotes.I feel that after three years of using Abraham quotes exclusively,there is now a danger of us starting to repeat some of them.Therefore from now onwards we will source our 'feel good' quotes from other books.They will still be highly inspirational in nature.

Secondly,we will also do away with the 'feel good' poems.Again here our fear is that we may start repeating some lines from old poems that we have done in the past three years.

Lastly,we are going to start a series called 'Dreams Do Come True'.I will say more about this series below.

With those preliminaries out of the way,may I be allowed to say that it really feels good to be back.

As the heading of this post(above) implies,this post is celebratory in nature.The idea of a book of our best posts has been there since the blog was launched back in 2008.But it remained a pipe dream until late last year when I was moved to make it happen.Today I can happily announce that this dream is about to be realized.In a few weeks time our book - 'FEELING GOOD:The best from the Feel Good Movement blog in 2011' - will be published.When this happens,a dream will have come true for us,ladies and gentlemen.

The 'DREAMS DO COME TRUE'(DDCT) Tour - Part 1

After a dream came true for us(above),I have been inspired to hit the road.I have been moved to go on a tour around Soweto schools initially,to motivate students to go for their dreams also.I want to tell our students - matriculants in particular - that their dreams(like doing well in their final year exams,for example) can indeed come true.

To this end I have prepared a free 10 to 20 minute motivational talk to present in my travels.During this talk I will give students some tips and guidelines on how they,too,can achieve their big goals.I will be using myself as a living example of how this is possible,from the way I made the FGM blog book dream happen.

These free motivational talks I will also give to employees of corporate companies if I am allowed to.Infact,I will tell everyone who lends me an ear about how they can make their dreams happen also.The having and achieving of dreams is not just for the young.

Each week I will then come back here(on the blog) and write about the highlights(best 'feel good moments') from the tour.

While this tour will start in schools around me(in Soweto),which I can easily reach by foot or by taxi,eventually I see the 'DDCT Tour' going across our borders to countries like Botswana,Swaziland,Lesotho etc.Later still,this tour will go up north into Africa.Afterwhich it will then go around the world.

THE YEAR THAT WAS - 2011

AROUND THE WORLD
- Without any doubt,the toppling of dictatorships in the Arab world made our year.
In what is now known as the Arab Spring,the peoples of Tunisia,Egypt and Libya rose up this year and overthrew their despotic rulers.The revolution in Libya turning out to be a particularly long and a protracted one in comparison to those of Tunisia and Egypt.
To witness people taking a stand in order to fight for their rights and then succeeding at it - without any arms in two instances(Tunisia and Egypt) - was truly heartening.

IN SOUTH AFRICA
- Our Table Mountain being named one of the 'New 7 Wonders of Nature' in November greatly exciting us here in the FGM.
In a worldwide poll in which people had to vote for seven natural wonders out of 28 finalists,Table Mountain became '1 of 7'.What was interesting about this was that in the post we wrote on the Sunday before the voting closed - 'Rooting for Our Table Mountain'(6th November) - we had been bullish about Table Mountain's chances.And this confidence was based on nothing other than our patriotism.
So you can imagine our joy when the list of winners was announced.We were so excited,we could not sit still.
Needless to say,'T M' making it on to this illustrious list is a boon to South African tourism.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE
- A year that started on a very trying note for me(and my family) is ending on a promising note.
For most of January and the whole of February I was not able to post anything on the FGM blog.I was was suffering from a writer's block of sorts.There was a lot of 'stuff' happening in my life.
The bread and butter challenges that I had to deal with were sapping my energy and motivation.
This inability to do one of the things that bring me true pleasure was very hard to take.I even considered giving up on this whole FGM project 'thingi'.

The turnaround came after I attended a church service at Grace Bible Church.
A friend invited me to a service at Grace in early March.And I went not because I expected answers to my bread and butter issues,but because he had been asking me to come along for a while now.It just felt like the right time to accept his invitation.
This service at Grace totally blew me away.I came back highly,highly inspired.
As a way to thank my friend for the invitation I decided to write about this Grace experience in a post - 'The Gospel According to Grace Bible Church'(13th March).And ever since this post of my Grace service attendance,I have been at it on the FGM blog.You could say that that church service kind of cured my writer's block.
Strangely,my bread and butter matters have been improving as well.As the year ends things are much,much better.

'Rea Vaya' Back on The Block

* EIGHT WEEKS!This is how long it lasted.
How the striking BRT bus drivers survived this long without pay is a million dollar(or is it rand?) question.

This strike officially ended this week(on Wednesday),after the drivers accepted a revised wage offer from BRT management.

For those of us in Soweto who use and love this form of transport,the settlement of the strike was a big deal.The sight if the BRT buses back on our roads again was a pleasing one.

The BRT bus system is our government's way of introducing an affordable and well run public transport system.It is supposed to offer a good alternative to the current township taxi(mini bus) system.And to a large extent,the BRT buses(otherwise known 'Rea Vaya',which means 'we are going') are achieving these goals.They are comfortable too,and run on schedule.They also give Soweto - where they were piloted - this world city feel.

A round of applause to both Samwu(the union representing the bus drivers) and the BRT management for finally coming to an agreement that ended the strike.

A Few Things to be Grateful For This Week

* The world celebrating World Gratitude Day this past Wednesday (21st September).
World Gratitude Day is a United Nations initiative that seeks to encourage world citizens to be more thankful.On this day we are urged to express gratitude for the good things around us or great deeds that people do.

In the spirit of this day,here in the FGM,this week we would like give thanks for the following:

1.Our national rugby team - the Springboks - going from strength to strength
in New Zealand,where they are taking part in the Rugby World Cup 2011.After their nail biting opening game against Wales,which they just managed to win(by 17 - 16),the Springboks put up a much better performance in their second game against Fiji.They beat Fiji 49-3.In their most recent game on Thursday(22nd September),'the bokke' hammered Namibia 87-0.
From this gradual rise in their performance graph,could we perhaps expect an even more emphatic win against their next opponents (Samoa) next Friday?
This would be nice.
But Samoa are in a different class ofcourse compared to Namibia.

2.The spring season weather here in the Gauteng province(in South Africa) still beautiful,even as we head towards the end of September,which officially started this season.For most of this month we have had mild temperatures(between 20 to 28 degrees each day) and clear bue skies all round.
The rain has stayed away,ladies and gentlemen.

3.The growing number of Feel Good Movement blog readers around the world.This number may not be earth shattering as yet,but we truly appreciate the fact that people take time out of their busy schedules to check us out.
To our readers in the USA,Malaysia,the United Kingdom,Lesotho(hae moo) and South Africa (ofcourse) much,much love to you all.

Roaring Send-Offs for the Springboks

*This past Thursday South Africans pitching up in their numbers at the Nelson Mandela Square to give our national rugby team - the Springboks - a resounding farewell.The team was leaving for New Zealand to take part in the 2011 edition of the Rugby World Cup.

The nation was at the square to say bye-bye to the Springboks,yes,but more importantly we were there to wish them good luck.We were there to tell them to come back with the Webb Ellis trophy.
As the defending champions - having won the last Rugby World Cup held in France in 2007 - it is imperative that our Springboks do well.More than just doing well though,it would really be awesome if this team can successfully defend their title.If they do manage to do this,South Africa would become the first rugby playing country to ever achieve this feat.

Here in The FGM we have no doubt that the Springboks will make us proud in New Zealand.We cannot profess to know the finer points of the rugby game,but we know a determined team when we see one.And on Thursday the determination to go out there and 'represent' was there on the players' faces for all to see.

Coach Peter De Villiers ,captain John Smit and your team,we wish you a fantastic tournament.

One Less Despot in the World

The news that the pro-democracy movement rebels in Libya have finally arrived in Tripoli.
After what seemed like an eternity compared to the revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt,the Libyan people's revolution bacame a reality this week.The despotic ruler of Libya - Muammar Gaddafi - has been ultimately and completelely toppled from power.

We are with the Libyan people as they celebrate their new and hard won freedom.As they carry out the necessary and sometimes painful mop-up operations in Tripoli (due to the recent fighting there),they are in our thoughts.

As for the Brother Leader himself,wherever he is,he must be brought back to Libya to account for human rights violations committed in Libya under his rule,and during the fighting.The country that is planning to host him,must know that it is going to harbour a fugitive from justice.

To the rebels we would like to say:

"Nice one,guys.Your struggle and eventual triumph is an inspiration
to all of us.With a little help from your friends,you made your dream
come true.And as you,yourselves,have maintained from the start,
this revolution is for all Libyans and not just for a specific group."

Life Lessons from The Youth of June 16th 1976

* So what did the youth of '76 teach us about life?
We ask this question because this past Thursday (16th June) here in South Africa we commemorated the events of that day back in 1976.On that day South African youth - mainly high school pupils in the townships - took to the streets to march and protest against the proposed use of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in schools.The medium of instruction had always been English.But the apartheid government then unilaterally decided to change it to Afrikaans.
In the resulting marches and protests against this change over 500 young people lost their lives as the police shot to kill,in an attempt to stop the countrywide protests.

From this '76 generation we learned that if you are not happy with the status quo do something about it.Do something to change it.This unsatisfactory situation could be in our in our personal lives or be a national issue.The students then could have easily accepted this change to Afrikaans because it was decreed by the authorities.This would have been an easier and more comfortable option.
But these guys didn't.

Secondly,we must be fearless if we are fighting an unjust situation.Our opponent may be all powerful and strong but we must still stand up to register our dissatisfaction.The apartheid security machinery was ruthless.To challenge the government of the day to try and force them to change their minds would have been considered unwise by many.
This might of the state,however,did not deter the students.

Finally,if yours is a just cause you may lose the battle but eventually you will win the war.This nationwide protest by the youth of '76 did not necessarily lead to the toppling of the apartheid government.The uprising was eventually cruhshed by the security forces.But this event of June 16th - like the Sharpville massacre of 1960 - was one of the turning points in the liberation struggle history of South Africa.It was one of the milestones that led to our eventual freedom.

* Us voters here is South Africa gettiing a lot of 't-c' from political parties this week.We were highly in demand.We were 'hot property',ladies and gentlemen.

This love hipped on voters is not surprising.This coming Wednesday - 18th May - South Africans are going to the polls to elect our local government representatives.In an attempt to make us vote for them,political parties of all shapes and sizes were falling over themselves to impress us.
They were all over the neighbourhoods.Their people knocked on our doors.They distributed pamphlets.They even invited us to their political rallies to read us their manifestos.

All this attention felt really nice.We do,however,wish that it came more often.We wish to see politicians come calling in our 'hoods' on regular basis.To come visit us only during elections time makes it too obvious that they are doing it to entice us to vote for them on Wednesday.It is difficult to take someone seriously who only comes around every five years.
If this was about winning over a lady's hand in a romantic relationship,all these political parties would have failed.

Having said that,we do,however,still have to go out there and exercise our democratic right to vote.
So who do we vote for?
We believe that local government elections today are about living conditions in our backyards.They are about dialectical materialism in communism speak.So the real question is whether you are getting the service that you deserve from your current local representative.Are your street lights only being put up now?Is an attempt to tar your dirt roads only being made now?All of this happening 17 years after you voted someone into office.
Let us show political parties that we can vote them out of power if they are not delivering.

Whoever we are going vote for on Wednesday,let us go out there and vote in our numbers.To choose not vote is not on.It took a lot of pain for us to get this right to vote.

The End of Terror as We Know It?

* A sense of relief around the world after the death of Osama Bin Laden.The al-Qaeda leader was fatally wounded in a shootout with United States troops in Abbottabad,Pakistan.

Without necessarily rejoicing at the death of another human being,we do hope that al-Qaeda will lose its steam now that its leader is gone.
al-Qaeda as a terror group was responsible for some of the most gruesome killings in recent times.Notably,the 2001 attacks by hijacked planes on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon in the United States which resulted in the death of atleast 3000 people.

The world is sharing the sense of relief with the US because al-Qaeda in its declared war against the US had no misgivings about attacking other countries with US links.The bombings of US embassies in Africa in 1998 - which were alledgedly carried out by al-Qaeda - led to the death of 231 people who were not necessarily all Americans.
Europe,too,experienced its own form of 9/11.Britain and Spain were attacked by al-Qaeda-linked groups at some stage.

Here is hoping that al-Qaeda loses its potency as a terror group now that its leader is no longer around.Even better,here is hoping that the group sees reason and realizes that terror is not the solution.

* Yet another South African raising our flag on the world stage.
This time it being raised by golfer Charl Schwarzel.Last Sunday he won the first major golf tournament of the year - the U S Masters.

With this win Charl confounded the golfing world.Before the tournament started no one had tipped him to win.He was just one the many professional golfers trying their luck at the Masters.All talk was about bo-Phil Mickelson(winner of last year's Masters),and how it was time for a European golfer to win this tournament.The last European golfer to win the Masters was Nick Faldo way back in 1996.

But the pundits had not reckoned with Africa.They had not reckoned with South Africa in particular.And this was strange because South African golfers had won a few major golf tournaments in recent times.Notably,Louis Oosthuizen won the British Open last year.While Trevor Immelman won the same Masters in 2008.And Retief Goosen has two U S Open tournaments to his credit.

After this past Sunday we have no doubt that when the next major golf tournament(The US Open) comes around South African golfers will be mentioned in the same breath as bo-Martin Kaymer(the current world no 1 golfer),bo-Rory Mcllroy(the rising star of world golf who led this Masters for the first three days).
And when this happens we - as South Africans - will say,"Thank you Charl."

A Reprieve for Zimbabwens, Pastors in a Million, 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 20'.

* Our government deciding to give Zimbabwens who may be living in South Africa illegally more time to legalise their status.It was announced that those who missed the 31st December 2010 deadline to fix their documentation won't be deported as yet.The process of deportation will only start on 1st August 2011.This means that those who missed the 31st December cut off time now have another six months to continue with the legalization process.
This postponement of deporting the 'illegally here' Zimbabwens,so to speak,by the government is commendable.It is a more humane way of dealing with this tricky immigration problem.

* Her church congregation may not be that big now,but it is a matter of time before Pastor Maureen Sebadela's followers swell in numbers.If her caring attitude towards her church members continues at the current rate,nothing will stop her church - 'Alpha & Omega',which is based here in Protea North - from being one of the biggest 'bazalwane' churches in Soweto.Possibly becoming as big as the Grace Bible Church one day.
In addition to the spritual upliftment she provides on Sundays,Pastor Maureen is known to give food parcels to those congregation members in need.In some instances she even helps out members with some money out of her own pocket.
We want to tell Pator Maureen that "we love your work my sister.And may the 'Alpha & Omega' church grow from strength to strength."

* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 20

Getting an idea to link our FGM Ts to a charitable cause.This idea was inspired by the way the Barcelona Football Club has partnered with UNICEF.Barcelona not only gives UNICEF publicity by putting its name on their soccer jersey,but they also give UNICEF a certain amount of money from each jersey sold.
The Feel Good Movement could similarly hook up with an organization like READ,for example.READ helps to increase the level of literacy in the country by teaching people how to read and write.We could then give,say,R10 to READ from each FGM t-shirt that we sell.
And we won't be doing this because we think people are likely to buy our Ts because of this link to charity.We are confident that we can still sell those 47 million t-shirts even wthout this charity link.The 'giving back' element will make hitting our target even more sweet.

15 Million Tests by June 2011, Improved Matric Results, 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 19'

* A national campaign that is underway to have atleast 15 million South Africans voluntarily undergo an HIV test.The idea is mainly to raise awareness around knowing our status and to remove the fear of going for an HIV test.In addition,for those who may be HIV +ve an early detection will help them get treatment that may save their lives.
We are all for healthy for a healthy nation.We urge all people of Mzansi to go and get tested.

* Congatulations are in order.The matriculants of 2010 doing well in their final year high school exams.The pass rate of the class of 2010 is 7.2% better than that of 2009.

"Well done guys."

It also being funny how almost everyone is coming forwrad to claim some credit for these improved matric results.There were the teachers unions beating their chests,saying their teaching skills were responsible.Then there was the government which insisted that the division of the Education portfolio into two ministries contributed to the good results.
Then I suppose we - in The FGM - can also claim some credit.Afterall we did write a post ("Wishes of Good Luck for Matric Students....") in which we motivated the matrics of 2010 to do well.Not to mention the excellent - if we may say so ourselves - 'feel good' poem('Class of 2010') that we put together for them.

* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 19

Slowly I am trying to get back into the grove of selling.It is proving to be challenging to a certain degree.I can't shake off the festive season laziness.The fact that I have to drive myself - as opposed to a boss saying I must now get on with it - does not help matters.
I am thinking that maybe after this coming week,when most people go back to work and the schools re-open,I will be able to get my motivation back.

adds:

In the past two weeks,leading up to Christmas and to New Year's eve,I have not been actively selling to be honest.The whole festive mood got to me also.The scenes around me here in my 'kasi' of people being on a holiday mode made me want to 'chill' also.You could say I also gave myself a vacation of sorts.
Now that the year has started I have to start getting out there to do some serious prospecting.
This year I plan to sell lots of FGM Ts.And if things go acoording to plan,I would like to have our Ts placed in some of our local retailers like YDE and Truworths.Even better though, would be an FGM Store here at our Protea Point Complex,selling our FGM Ts mostly.

THE YEAR THAT WAS - 2010

*IN SOUTH AFRICA

- The FIFA World Cup coming to Africa for the first time in its history.And this tournament being held here in South Africa.By all accounts Mzansi doing an excellent job in hosting it.This hosting also getting to unite the country like never before.

For us an abiding image of this tournament was this one instance where a camera moved from the football field to go to the stands where it captured former USA President Bill Clinton and Rolling Stones' leading man Mick Jagger having a chat while watching the game.After this shot,it had then dawned that the world is indeed here.

*AROUND THE WORLD

1. The release from house arrest of the Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi,which brought joy not only to the people of Burma but to all freedom loving people around the world.It was a release that gave the people of Burma hope that things can get better.

2. The Nobel Prize Committee standing firm in its decision to award this year's Nobel Peace Prize to the jailed Chinese dissident -Mr Liu Xiaobo .He was given the prize for his fighting for basic human rights in his home country.China responded to this awarding by complaining and making threats.To which the Prize Committee said,"Suit yourself".
A nice touch from the Committee was an empty chair at the awards ceremony where Liu Xiaobo would have sat if he was not behind bars.

*ON A PERSONAL NOTE

1. The decision by yours truly to leave my 9 to 5 job to go and focus on the Feel Good Movement project.Admittedly it has been a difficult year.Even painful at times.But I have no regrets.I have learned a lot in this period.
There is no 'ho checha ha ramo' here.I am going forward.
While at it,I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to my family(Shadrack,Duduzile,Teboho,Thato and Tumelo) for the hardship that this 'going on my own' thing caused them.I will make it up to you guys.Of this,I have no doubt.

2. The support we are continuing to get from my 'kasi'(Protea North) people as far as the buying of our FGM t-shirts is concerned.It has been humbling to see most of them buying the t-shirts without even first checking what our website was all about.They simply took my word for it.

T P Mazembe Making Africa Proud, A Call for our Public Libraries to Stay Open for Longer, 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 17'.

* T P Mazembe becoming the first African football club side to reach the Club World Cup final.
On Tuesday this team from the Democratic Republic of Congo defeated the champions of South America -Internacional(from Brazil) - by 2 goals to nil,in the first semi-final game played in Abu Dhabi.
They will be meeting Italy's Inter Milan - the winner of the other semi-final - in the final tonight.
Their 'first' on behalf of Africa ofcourse echoed another 'first' for Africa earlier this year when South Africa hosted the FIFA World Cup for the first time on African soil.
As the year 2010 ends,the African football flag is still flying high indeed.
Here is hoping that T P Mazembe can go all the way and win against Inter in tonight's game.
We wish them really well.

* The Sunday Times columnist - Lihle Z Mtshali - making a call for our public libraries to stay open for longer hours.She did so this past Sunday(12/12/10) in her column(New York State of Mind) entitled "The little things that bring such joy to US life".In here she wrote that it was such a pleasure for her to discover that the New York City public libraries are open on Saturday afternoons.
She urged that our South African public libraries should do so too,to encourage a culture of reading in the country.
We could not agree with Ms Mtshali more.In addition,we wish to see the township public libraries filled not only with people who are there to study or do scholarly research,but also filled with people who are there to read for pleasure.People should go to our 'kasi' libraries to 'chill' with a book,just like they do other recreational activities like 'braaing' or watching a soccer game.

ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 17

* Trying to collect some due payments at this time of the year for FGM Ts taken is proving to be a quite a challenge.I seem to be competing for the same resources that are needed for Christmas shopping.I am competing with Christmas gifts and groceries.
As a result I did not get most of the payments I expected.Some people made a plan however.For example this one customer payed me with some Shoprite vouchers they were given for free at work.
Cash would have been better ofcourse,but when the going is this tough I can take most forms of payment.
I say most forms because I would definitely draw a line at being payed with food items.

Developments in the Dewani case, Required Listening on Wednesday Nights, 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 16'.

* Some clarity now in the Anni Dewani murder case.After weeks of speculation that the killing of Mrs Dewani in a highjacking incident in the Gugulethu township had more questions than answers to it,we now know that her husband -Shrien Dewani - had something to do with it.This is according to one of the arrested suspects - Zola Tango - who has agreed to become a state witness in this case.
The Dewani couple is from Britain and was visiting South Africa.
There is a sense of relief that Anni Dewani's own family will now know the real motive for her murder when the case goes to court.
There is relief also on our side - as South Africans - that this despicable crime as not as straight forward as 'another tourist is killed in South Africa'.We may have a challenge around crime, yes,and we are certainly doing our best to get on top of it,but we do not need outsiders to come here and make the situation worse.

* 5FM is the place to be on Wednesday nights between 10pm and 12 midnight.
In a show called Powernights DJs Fresh and Euphonik interview 'happening' DJs.During this show the invited DJs let lose and talk about how they got started in the industry.Even if one is not really into the 'house music' scene,you will still love the stories of how these guys 'made it',so to speak.As self-employed agents DJs are no different to entrepreneurs.Their stories of struggle and hardship in this highly competitive field are uplifting.And the invited DJ's choice of 5 significant songs/tunes/tracks - in their opinion - further adds to the allure of this show.
And to DJ Fresh we say:
"Powernights(Wednesday editions) brings back memories of 'The Chair'.
And oena,Fresh, you are a gift to the radio industry in this country."

* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 16
I must admit that to go out and sell when you know that you do not really have the stock does not feel the same.The urge to sell is not really as strong.On one hand you want to generate those leads.But on another you have this fear that someone may actually want to take a T there and then,which you will not have.The result being that you will end up 'crying' over a lost sale.
Besides these 'lost sales',I also meet people who are waiting fot the Ts that they have ordered.And inevitably they will ask if I have have received my new stock yet.
The way I see it, at this rate,my story of 'waiting for my new stock' will eventually wear thin.
I have therefore decided to reduce the number of days that I am on the 'sales beat'.For now I will go out only on three days - Mondays,Tuesdays and Wednesdays.On these days I do not normally meet that many people on the streets.
This kind of 'hiding strategy' will help to keep my leads generation momentum going,but at a low rate. At the same time it will shield me from all the 'enquiries',so to speak.That is,until my new stock arrives.

* As we start the festive season proper(December month) here are a few words to ponder on
forgiveness.This extract is from an excellent report on gratitude called The Astonishing Power of Gratitude,written by Wes Hopper(www.horncreek.com).Each time we read this report we are highly inspired.Inspired to become better human beings.The section in the report on forgiveness is losely quoted below:
"Forgive everyone who ever did anything you have been carrying a
grudge about.The guy who cheated you in that business deal.The sister-in-law
who never repaid the R50.The teacher who gave you the 'F' that you didn't deserve.The
ex-spouse who dragged you through the ugly and expensive divorce.Everyone.Anything.
Forgiveness is not something that you do for the other person,it is something you do for
yourself.
Remember that the Universe works by law,not by chance.There are no coincidences in the
people that show up in our lives.And becuase the Universe is friendly,these people don't
show up to punish us,but often to teach us."

* Here in Mzansi we call a five-fingered clap on the face a 'mpama'.This past Monday night Barcelona FC - our favourite team in Europe - gave their archrivals Real Madrid FC a 'mpama'.They hammered them 5-0 in a La Liga football game.In the process 'Barca' made all of us who are fans deliriously happy.
In a game that Mourinho - the Real Madrid coach - will never ever forget,Barcelona gave his team a footballing lesson.'Barca' didn't just win by a big margin,but they did so while toying with the Madrid players.Fans at Nou Camp - Barcelona's home ground where the game took place - and those watching from around the world were thoroughly entertained.
Now,can Mourinho and his star player - Ronaldo - please shut up,"Quietly enjoy your humble pie."
And how about this joke doing the rounds:
Ronaldo(Real Madrid star player) :"God sent me to earth to teach people how to play football."
Lionel Messi(Barcelona star player):"I didn't send anyone."

* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 15
Two things happened this week that got me excited.The first one was having two people who have FGM Ts already expressing interest in buying another t-shirt.They wanted this T in a different colour to their previous ones.
To hear that people love our Ts so much that they want a second one was humbling.
The second good happening was when a friend I had told about our Ts and given our flyer to - maybe six months ago - phoning me out of the blue to order not one,but two FGM t-shirts.This telephonic ordering was a first.I nearly fell off my chair.
This order out of the blue further emphasised the value of telling as many people as you can about the stuff that you are 'pushing'.Sometime down the line they may still get back to you to buy.
In both cases above I did not have the prefered sizes and colours.Infact,my current stock of t-shirts is now finished.But while I wait for my next stock - possibly after the December holidays because the factories are also winding down for Christmas - I will continue to pound the streets.I am carrying one sample t-shirt in my bag.It is important to keep the momentum of getting leads going.These I can then follow up on once the new stock arrives.

Thinking of the New Zealand Mine Tragedy Families, Saying No To Violence, 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 14'.

* Our thoughts being with the Greymouth town people in New Zealand who lost their loved ones on Wednesday.A second underground gas explosion at the Pike River mine in that town resulted in the loss of the 29 miners who had been trapped underneath.
It can't have been easy to accept the news when just a few days before this fatal explosion there were high hopes that the miners may just be rescued.
We are with the grieving families in spirit.
In retrospect,the recent rescue of the 33 Chilean miners under similar circumstances being a true miracle that we should all be really greatful for.

* "16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM FOR NO VIOLENCE AGAINNST WOMEN AND CHILDREN"

* ON THE FGM TS SALES FRONT - PART 14
As we approach the end of the month I am starting to practice my smiling.I am going to need it.
I know I am going to have instances where a payment for a t-shirt taken does not come through.Or have an instance where a 'definite' lead - someone who assured me they will buy a T - does not buy when I arrive with the T.
I smile through all of this.I do this despite feeling let down.
If there is one thing I have learned so far through selling t-shirts,it is that one should never 'lose it',or give ultimatums when someone does not come through for you as promised.If you do,it results in this tension that makes going to that particular house again a stress-filled affair.Ultimately,it can even lead to someone refusing to pay altogether.
It is much,much better to receive paymnt,or have someone take a t-shirt,even if it is three months down the line.And this will only happen if one is polite and patient throughout the repeated let downs.

Local Pick'n Pay Star Cashiers, Emails from bo-Mpho Kgomo, 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 13'

* She looks up when you get to her till.Then as she greets you,she smiles.This is Millicent Peloeng.She is a cashier at the Protea North Pick'n Pay.
This kind of attentiveness to customers from a 'check out' lady is refreshing.
Most cashiers are OK.In some instances,however,you do feel like you are just a number that they need to process quickly and get out of the way.The greeting may be there,but it is done with no ethusiasm..
Not with Millicent.Most of the time she is really 'there' with you.
If you happen to land in my neighbourhood,and you end up at our Pick'n Pay,ask for Millicent.
Tell her I sent you.

* This email that we received from Mpho Kgomo.This parable touches on what the expression - 'ubuntu' - is really about.

"A mouse looked through a crack in the wall to see a farmer and his wife open a package.
'What food might this contain?',the mouse wondered.
He was devasted to discover that it was a mousetrap.

Retreating to the farmyard,the mouse proclaimed this warning:
'There is a mousetrap in the house!'
The chicken clucked and scratched,raised her head and said,'Mr Mouse,I can tell that this is
of great concern to you,but it is of no consequence to me.I cannot be bothered by it.'

The mouse then turned to the pig and told him,
'There is a mousetrap in the house!'
The pig sympathised,but said,'I am very sorry Mr Mouse,but there is nothing I can do about it.'

The mouse turned to the cow and said,
'There is a mousetrap in the house!'
The cow said,'Wow Mr Mouse,I am sorry for you,but it's no skin off my nose.'

So,the mouse returned to the house,head down and dejected,to face the farmer's mousetrap...alone.
That very night a sound was heard throughout the house.It was a sound of a mousetrap catching
its prey.The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught.In the darkness,she did not see it.
It was a venomous snake whose tail was caught in the trap.And the snake bit her.

The farmer rushed her to the hospital.
When she returned home she still had a fever.Everyone knows that you treat fever with a fresh
chicken soup.So the farmer took his knife to the farmyard for the soup's main ingredient.

But his wife's sickness continued.Friends and neghbours came to sit with her around the clock.
To feed them,the farmer butchered the pig.
But,alas,the farmer's wife did not get well.........she died.

So many people came for her funeral that the farmer had to slaughter the cow in order to provide
the meat for all of them at the funeral luncheon.

And the mouse looked upon it all,from the crack in his wall,with great sadness.It was instructive though.Next time his neighbour has a problem,he will never say it's not his problem.

Each of us is a vital thread in one another's life.When one of us is threatened,we are all at risk."

This week I had to contend with the elements.It rained at the beginning of the week.This forced me to stay indoors.This was a setback of sorts.When the week starts I am usually raring to go.Going out on the streets every day is a form of work for me,like those who do 9-5.If I don't work,I won't earn.

So what does one do when stuck indoors?Well,I did some reading.I am currently reading a book called
A Google Story by David Vise.This book is highly recommended.It is about how Google - the search engine company - started,and how it got so big so quickly.

By the end of the week the rain had cleared up however.With these clear and beautiful blue skies,I hit the ground running.I wanted to make up for the lost days.And my hard work paid off.I sold
two FGM t-shirts.This was really good.The last time I sold two t-shirts in one week was more than a month ago.
It must rain more often,I told myself.

Suu Kyi's Release, Eskom's Bounce Back, And 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 12'

* News that Aung San Suu Kyi - the pro-democracy leader in Burma - has been released from house arrest.She was released yesterday by the junta that runs Burma(or Maynmar).
We are as delighted as the Burma people about her eventual release.
Ms Suu Kyi had been under house arrest on and off since 1990 when her party - the National League for Democracy - won the national elections in that country.The army had then ignored this result and had continued the running of the country like before.Suu Kyi was put under house arrest.
Since then Suu Kyi - who is a Mandela-like figure for the people of Burma - had sort to bring back democracy to her country by using peaceful means.And her efforts were recognised by no less than the Nobel Prize Committee which gave her the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991.
Her release is something to feel good about.It's something to shout about.

* Eskom - our electricity supplier - doing a reasonably good job in recovering after a power failure here in my 'kasi' - Protea North.
Our electricity went down this past Tuesday afternoon.For some reason only certain areas of the neighbourhood were affected.And I happen to live in one of these affected areas.
Needless to say,this schism in electrity supply led to all kinds of jokes.The residents of the 'lights on' areas said that we - in the 'dark areas' -don't pay our electricity bills.People also said that the dark and depressing days of 'load shedding' are back with a vengeance.
Our electricity did finally come back.The next morning.To Eskom's credit,even during the 'lights out' period one could tell that someone was working on the problem,because electricity would come back but only to immediately go off again.

* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 12

It is getting easier and easier for me to approach people and pitch to them,I am finding out.No doubt this comes from doing this every day.More than this growing confidence,I am loving the way I am making friends.Before I started selling the t-shirts I used to be aware that,for example,a certain individual stays in my 'kasi' by being familiar with their face.And when we met we did not necessarily greet each other.But now - after I had 'cold called' them previously - when we meet we greet each other.Not only this,now I even know most of my 'kasi' residents by name.This is because when I make my sales pitch I first introduce myself and then go:

"Nna ke bua le mang?"

In some instances when I meet them again we don't even talk about my t-shirts.We talk about other things.This is how I have 'bumped' into people I share interests (like reading) with.

Even if we do not get to sell those 47 million t-shirts,personally I would have enjoyed this experience of getting to know people.And this - I swear - is not a cop out.

A Flurry of Activity for Good Causes, Elvis Blue's Heartening Gesture, And 'On the FGM Ts Sales Front- Part 11'

* Corporate South Africa starting the ball rolling as far as doing something for charities is concerned.This is just as well because the season of giving is almost upon us.
There was the Shell Select Charity Challenge that ran on 5FM recently.The challenge was to raise a total of R500,000 for charities.And the radio station DJs competed with each other to see who could raise the most money for their favourite good cause.
Also,Vodacom - the cellular network provider - has started its 'Change The World' campaign.Here South Africans with skills are invited to donate themselves - so to speak - to 10 designated charities for a period of six months.They are to offer their skills to these charities duing this period.And while they are at it Vodacom will pay for their upkeep.The charities will be getting this skillful help for free.

The man on the street cannot but be moved by these initiatives to reach out too to charities.

* The winner of Mnet's 'IDOLS' singing reality contest - Elvis Blue(real name Jan Hoogendyk) - blowing us all away not only with his singing,but with his decision to give half of his R500,000 cash first prize to his fellow finalist - Lloyd Cele.Lloy Cele would have apparently have done same had he won.
The decision to go 50/50 on the first prize money - irrespective of who won - was taken by the two contestants before they went for their final showdown in the show's finale.
We would like to say 'big up' to Elvis for putting his money where his mouth was.Where money is involved it is indeed rare not to have broken promises.

* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 11
This week I saw some signs that my hard work of pounding the streets of my neighbourhood - Protea North - selling FGM Ts is starting to pay off.On more than one occasion I did a sales pitch to a prospect who when I finished went,

"Ja,I saw 'so and so' wearing your t-shirt."

On one particular day - Friday - I had two people tell me this.Needless to say,hearing this from a potential buyer leaves one feeling very good.Because then they are likey to buy a T.If not there and then,then at some future date.

To bo-Amakipkip et al, we say 'watch out'.The FGM Revolution is HERE.It's in my 'kasi' of Protea North today.Tomorrow we take the whole country.Afterwhich, it is the world.

Wishes of Good Luck for Matric Students, Well Run 'Kasi' Spazas, And 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 11'.

* The many messages of good luck for our matriculants as they start writing their final exams.Everybody in the country saying they must do well.
We add our voice to that of the nation in urging them to excel.We would like the 'matrics' to say nothing about the 3-week teacher's strike,or even to mention the extended June holidays(because of the FIFA World Cup).As one school principal - whose school has maintained a 100% pass rate since 2000 - said about her matric students:

"My learners have learnt that you cannot blame....circumstanes.
It (all) depends on you,your attitude and what you want from life."

* A township small shop - 'spaza' - that is impressively run.It's run from a house(no 580 Heunis street,Protea North) like all true 'spazas'.
To start off,the owners are very curteous.When you get there you don't feel like you are intruding,you are warmly greeted.This shop sells things like pens.These you would never find in a typical 'spaza'.It also has a Lotto machine.This in itself is an achievement for a 'spaza'.But even better,their machine is always working.I don't remember ever getting there and finding it out of order.This 'spaza' sells newspapers too.
Finally,it has a bell.If you happen not to find anybody on the window to serve you on arrival, you just press a bell on the counter and pronto someone appears.
One could go on and on about this 'spaza'.
I just want to say 'big up' to the owners for a well run joint.

* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 11

I am learning that days have different energies.On one day I can do my 'walk about' and find five 'sure' leads.These are people who really want to support me by taking a T,but who may not have money at that time and will therefore say I must see them at the end of the month.
On other days,though, I will get no leads whatsoever.This is despite me doing exactly the same things I did on those '5 sure leads' days.These things would include speaking to more or less the same number of people,if not more.

Knowing on which days I am going to be 'hot' would be really nice.Because on my 'cold' days I would simply stay at home.
While I work on that 'million rand' puzzle,I will have to continue to go out there every day and speak to people.

* Former President - Thabo Mbeki - lauching his Foundation last week.It is to be called The Thabo Mbeki Foundation.It's main aim is to help make this century(21st) a century for Africa.The Foundation will help Africans make a lasting contribution to the world.A contribution that the world will remember the continent by.
There is no more suited person to help make this renewal of Africa a reality.Mr Mbeki - even when still in office - has always been passionate about making Africa great again.Now that he is 'free' - so to speak - he is in a better position to go after one of his cherished dreams.
We would like to wish Mr Mbeki well in this latest undertaking of his.And we are fully behind you ntate.It's about time Africa shone once again.

* Encountering this truly inspirational quote about people who dare to dream big.It was in a TIME magazine issue of last year(2009).This was a special year-ending edition referred to as 'Person of the Year'.This quote appeared in the column('In the Arena') by Joe Klein.It went
something like this:

"IT IS NOT THE CRITIC WHO COUNTS:not the man who points out
how the strong man stumbles,or where the doer of deeds could have done
them better.The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena,
whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood,who strives valiantly,
who errs and comes up short again and again....who spends himself in a
worthy cause;who,at the best,knows in the end ,the triumph of high
achievement,and who at the worst,if he fails,at least he fails while
daring greatly."

* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 9

This past week pounding the streets selling FGM Ts was particularly trying.Earlier in the week it was blazing hot outside.Temperatures here in Jozi were around 30 degrees.Trying to sell to passers by in this heat was no joke.Nobody was willing to stand even for even a second in the sun to hear my sales pitch.In some instances I was lucky.There would be a tree nearby and this where I gently guided my prospect.

If the heat was not enough of a hindrance,my legs started to ache also.The daily walking on hard surfaces was taking its toll.
Maybe,just maybe,the idea of sitting in one spot with a table of your wares is not so bad after all.In this case atleast one gets to sit the whole day.If the scorching summer heat continues I may just consider this option.For now though the street walking continues.

As if taking taking a cue from my complaining above,this week saw no movement on the FGM Ts sales front.After four weeks of selling atleast one T a week,I sold nothing this week.

A Golden Boy's Time in Delhi, Resourceful Budding Entrepreneurs, And 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 8'.

* A nice touch from South Africa's golden boy - Cameron van der Burgh - at the Commonwealth games that are currently being held in India.After winning gold in the 100 meter breastroke swimming event he raised his two hands to display the phrase - 'KE NAKO'.This phrase means 'IT'S TIME' in the Sesotho langauge.
And ofcourse this phrase was used as FIFA's slogan during the recent football World Cup held here in South Africa.
As to why Cameron had it written inside the palms of his two hands we can only speculate.We are going to give it our best shot:

a) KE NAKO for Cameron to win some gold.
or
b) IT'S TIME for South Africa to top the medals count in these games.
or
c) KE NAKO for Africa - as represented by South Africa,amongst others -
to really do well at these games.

* A neighbourhood barber - Rashido - showing some enterprise in setting up his hair cutting place.
Instead of looking for a place to rent to house his business,Rashido simply erected a tent-like structure and had it attached to a church fence.For electricity to power his hair cutting machines he uses a portable electricity generating 'thingi' that runs on this big battery.
A chair or two inside this tent completes his shop.
My man here has no rent worries.And because he is cheap at R10 a haircut('chiskop'),business is brisk.But be warned,his haircut has no frills.After cutting your hair there is nothing like washing your head with a nice smelling shampoo etc etc,like they do at a hair salon.But for R15 saving - 'ekasi' hair salons can charge as much as R25 for a 'chiskop' - I can happily do this head-washing myself when I get home.
To all the Rashidos who have no excuses for not 'getting on with it':'big up' to you guys.

* ON THE FGM TS SALES FRONT - PART 8

On this daily beat of pushing FGM Ts in my 'kasi',I am getting to be friends with my fellow hawkers.
There are the vegetable guys - bo-Msoja.These are the guys who load a trolley with vegetables and push it around the neighbourhood.As they move around they constantly blow this trumpet-like whistle to alert residents of their passing by.
With my 'smaller-nyana' sling bag containing 3 to 4 t-shirts,I still have it relatively easy compared with these guys pushing laden trolleys.These guys work hard.

Then you have guys like bo-Freddy.He makes hand made Afro-themed artefacts.You will find Freddy with a table full of his wares next to the local Pick'n Pay entrance on some days.
Also, there are bo-Joshua,who sells hand-crafted lady earrings door to door.

Each time we 'bump' into each other we share our respective selling experiences.Most importantly,we encourage each other.

The Show Going On in India, DJ Black Coffee's Marathon Playing, And 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 7.

* The Commonwealth Games in Delhi(India) going ahead today.They are starting inspite of the tons of negative publicity the host nation received vis-a-vis its readinesss to host these games.There were complaints about the unfinished athletes village.There were also concerns about security in India.It was said that the participating athletes may become targets for terror groups.Because of this latter concern some individual athletes went as far as withdrawing from the games.
That the games will be starting as scheduled today is a testament to the Indian government's best efforts to get its act together around the games' organization.'Big up' too,to the various athletic associations of the the Commonwealth countries for showing their support for the games by pitching up despite the concerns.
The chance to host such games doesn't come often,therefore the people of India need all our support.

* DJ Black Coffee making Mzansi proud last Sunday.He attempted to set a new World Record for non-stop dj-ing.He played for a solid 60 hours non-stop at the Moponya Mall last week.He started playing his set from Thursday(23/9/10) midnight and went all the way to Sunday(26/9/10).In terms of the rules he was allowed some small breaks(20 minutes) after every 4 hours of continuous playing.
All of this playing was for a charitable cause.He was raising funds for his newly launched DJ Black Coffee Foundation,which is going to focus on helping disabled people.
We would like to congratulate Nkosinathi Maphumulo(Black Coffee's real name) for this fine achievement.The people from Guiness must still officially pronounce on this World Record,but we have no doubt that it is just a matter of time before they to do so.
With this feat DJ Black Coffee has thrown the gauntlet to all of us South Africans.What other World Record can we have a go at?

* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 7

So which is better,active selling or passive selling?
By active selling I mean an instance where you actualy ask people - by addressing them - to buy your products.Passive selling,on the other hand,is when you have a stand displaying your wares and are hoping that the passing traffic will buy from you.
In my short experience of selling FGM Ts on the streets I believe that with active selling one is able to move more products.Having said that,with this type of selling you do get more 'in your face' rejections.So one has to have a thick skin.Personally,I will take active selling any day over passive selling.What I have learned is that when you ask people to buy from you they may not necessarily do so there and then,but they will tell you when to come.With passive selling,creating a lead is not in your hands.You rely on the prospect deciding to stop by to inquire.

After that postulation I am sure I am expected to say that I sold hundreds of FGM Ts this week.Eh!...not exactly.In due course I will.But this week being blown away by the way a customer(Bra Sam) placed his faith in me.When it occured that I didn't have the FGM t-shirt in his prefered size and colour,he decided to give me the money all the same,saying that I can bring the t-shirt when my new stock arrives.I was speechless,and really grateful.This was the first time that such a thing has happened to me in my t-shirt selling life.

Conversations with bo-Tebogo, Fascinating Books on Success, And 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 6'.

* Getting a chance to speak to a gentleman called Tebogo.He is the guy who sells car stickers at the robots next to the BP garage here in my 'kasi'(Protea North).He regaled me with tales of what it is like to sell stuff to passing motorists.For example,how some drivers pull up their windows when he approaches.And he was quite philosophical about such things.He admitted that it comes with his territory.
But what I really admired about Tebogo was how hard he works.He is at these robots from 9am to 6pm almost every day.And he does all this selling while standing on his feet.
It occured to me that if some of us could work even half as hard as Tebogo does we could indeed go far
in life.

"Thanks for the inspiration,Tebogo."

* Finishing my reading of the book - OUTLIERS -by Malcolm Gladwell.And being hugely motivated by it.In this book Mr Gladwell explores some theories about what makes people successful.With a lot of statistics to back up his theories,he tries to show that most of the really successful people in the world don't become so in isolation.In other words,there are always certain factors that help them along the way.These factors could be things like their family history,or the fact that when they made it there was no economic depression in the world to deal with,so on and so forth.There is nothing like a self-made man,Malcom maintains.
I particularly loved two chapters in this book.These two chapters - '10 000 Hours' and 'Marita's Bargain' - stress how paramount it is to work hard at your chosen profession.The message in these two chapters is gospel to live by.

* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 6

Due to the general reluctance from people as a whole to buy a mere t-shirt for R150, I decided to bring down the price to R100 a T.This was not an easy decision to make.Selling the FGM Ts for R100 makes our margin very low.And I did not take this 'forced' price reduction lying down.For example,I indicated that the Ts are made by the Barron company,which has a high reputation in the t-shirt manufacturing business.I also mentioned that our Ts are embroidered as opposed to being printed.Embroidered writing lasts longer compared to the printed one.All of this was to no avail.
With the people having spoken, I had to oblige.Also,admittedly it is better - at this stage - move the stock than to debate the merits of of the T price.

With a more agreeable price of R100,this week saw a slight movement on the Ts front.Another T was sold.

Money for Players in our PSL, Happy Birthdays, And 'On The FGM T's Sales Front - Part 5'.

* Our local football league - The Premier Soccer League - starting to pay its players some serious money.This was reported in an article by Carlos Amato(Sunday Times Sport,19/09/10).It is stated in this article that a PSL player can start off with as much as R40 000 per month.While the established stars in a big team can clear as much as R5 million a season.
This is not bad money for doing something that one loves.This kind of money for basically going out there to play a game or two per week,with practice sessions in between.This is the life.
For all parents with 4 to 5 year old boys,it would be wise to start channelling them towards a soccer career.By the time they start playing in the PSL you could be starting a life in the pound seats.
I am starting my own channeling with my 5 year old nephew -Tumelo.

* This past Sunday - 19th September - it being a birthday of 'yours truly'.One feels truly blessed to have seen another one of these special days everyone's life.

* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 5

It is easier,yes,to approach people and try and sell them something if all of this is happening in your own backyard.At the same time,though, most of these potential customers would have also known how your life was like before.They would have known you when you still had nice cushy job at a bank;when you still had a car,and when you still even had a house of your own.Inevitably they will ask me if I gave up all of that to go and sell t-shirts on the streets.Because this is basically what I am doing now.

But I think it may not be as simple as that.Some of the stuff that has happened to me I could not help ofcourse.Also,it is about having a certain vision of how one's life should be like;it is about persuing a dream.Along the way it has been rough I must admit.The hole in which one is in sometimes seems to have no bottom.One - at times -seems to be sinking deeper and deeper,to such an extent that it would be much easier to forget the whole thing and go back to a 9-5 job.

But,as they say,this is it.I put myself in this. I have to make it work.I would like to think that my current pain is part of getting there.At some stage we all get our breaks.

As if reading my thoughts above, the people of Protea North responded this week.They made it a good week for me.I sold two t-shirts this week,ladies and gentlemen.
Is was wonderful to see the number of 'Ts Sold This Week' on the FGM Ts Barometer finally change from 84 to 86.It had stayed stuck at 84 for what seemed like ages.

Could this be the start of a steady climb towards that magical 47 million target?

Serious Attempts by the Government to end the Public Servant's Strike, Pitso Mosimane's First Win, And 'On the FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 4'.

* Efforts from the government side to now quickly get to the bottom of the issues that have kept public servants(including teachers) away from work for almost three weeks.President Jacob Zuma weighed in himself this week.He instructed the relevant ministers to go back to the negotiating table.This after the talks between the government and the public servants had reached a stalemate over the two key issues of a salary increase offer by the government of 7% and a housing allowance of R800,while the unions demand 8.6% and R1000 respectively.
It is commendable that the government is trying to end this industrial dispute with some urgency.The strike has gone on for far too long.Its effects are there for all to see.Patients have died in some hospitals due to lack of care.While students - the matriculants in particular - have lost valuable study time.

* The new Bafana Bafana coach - Pitso Mosimane - getting a confidence boosting win in his first competitive game in charge.Bafana Bafana defeated Niger 2-0 on Wednesday in their 1st game of trying to qualify for the AFCON 2012 tournament.
This was actually Mosimane's second win as Bafana coach.But the game with Ghana's Black Stars,where they won 1-0, was a friendly.
There can't be a more satisfying feeling than starting one's job on a good and positive footing.Here is hoping for more of the same from ntate Mosimane le bashemane ba hae.

* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 4

After being on the road for the past three weeks and not making much headway as far as selling any Ts was concerned,this week I decided not to venture out.I decided to stick to my 'kasi' - Protea North - and do my prospecting here.

I suppose I had developed some form of fatigue from all the 'nos' from 'strangers'.It was a rejection phobia of sorts.For now I was going to focus only on people that I was familiar with.

In my 'kasi' I simply walked up and down the township,knowing that somehow I am bound to 'bump' into quite a number of people I knew.These I was going to try and press FGM Ts on.

And indeed I did meet a few familiar faces in my 'walk about'.I had to be careful though becuase some I didn't know that well.I didn't want to be seen to be now becoming friendly because I want them to buy something from me.
In one of my 'small talk before pitching' encounters I got definite lead.As I parted company with this particular gentleman I said,"So ntate,wena when are you taking your FGM t-shirt?".He replied,"Even now I can take it".Just like that.I nearly fell off my chair.In all my really serious prospecting of the past three weeks I had never managed to sell anything,now here I was - with a slightly more casual approach - about to make a sale in a while.It was a wonderful situation to be in.

Unfortunately I did not have his prefered colour(navy blue) and size(XL).I had run out of these.I duly noted this lead down and promised him to deliver the T in due course.But what a pleasure it was to know that I came this close to making a sale.

Coming Visits By Rock Band - '30 Seconds To Mars', Miss SA Placing in the Miss Universe Contest, And 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 3'.

* The news that super rock band '30 SECONDS TO MARS' is coming to South Africa.
They will be doing 2 shows, in Johannesburg and in Cape Town,in November.
We are big fans of the band here in The FGM and are thrilled that they are coming to these shores.Besides the melody in their songs,we love that choir-like chorus that is feature of most of their songs.This chorus sounds like a group of school children's choir.
We heard about the band's pending visit on 5FM.It was pleasing to note that the 5FM DJ's - as they made the announcement - were excited themselves about the band's coming.They must love the band as much as we do.

* The current Miss South Africa - Nicole Flint - being placed in the top 10 of the Miss Universe beauty contest that was held in Las Vegas,USA,recently.
This is no small feat,ladies and gentlemen.In effect this means our Nicole is one of the 10 most beautiful ladies in the world.
It would have been nice if she had gone on to win the title.But this would have resulted in South Africa being the object of viscious envy.I mean we have just had the FIFA World Cup.We could not possibly have the Miss World crown too.It would be unfair.We must give the other countries a chance.
For the record ,the title was won by Miss Mexico - Jimena Navarrete.Well done to her too.

* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 3

Next,I took my hawking of the FGM Ts to the nearby Protea Gardens mall.This mall area has the mall itself,another taxi rank and two filling stations(Shell and Caltex).It definitely had more people I could speak to.If selling is a numbers game, it follows then that the more people I speak to the higher are my chances of making a sale.And to make it even easier for people to buy I decided to drastically reduce the selling of the Ts.We normally sell them for R150 each.This time I made them R50 a T.This price - by the way - is lower that our cost price.I would be literally selling the Ts at a loss.

So there I was,going: "Excuse me,sawubona,my name is Thapelo.I have these nice T-shirts that I am selling.And they are only R50 each."A prospective buyer would then take the T from me for a closer look.As they are examining the T, I would be holding my breath,desperately hoping that this is going to be my first sale to a 'stranger' at my first attempt.But it was not to be.After having a look he would return it,saying he wanted to take it but did not any money now.And so it went on like this, from this person to that person.
There was something still missing in my package/presentation.Just that one small thing.

I was encouraged by the fact that the reduction in the price seems to have resulted in an improvement in my selling efforts.People may not be buying as yet,but they are taking a closer look at the Ts.They are wanting to feel quality of the make.
Having said that,I am not sure though if selling at this price of R50 is sustainable.Selling at less than the cost price is surely the quickest route to the poor house.

The 'Vuvuzela' Making South Africa Proud, Caster Semenya being Back, And 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 2'.

* It being official,ladies and gemtlemen.The word 'vuvuzela' is now part of the English language vocabulary.In this year's Oxford English Dictionary our 'vuvuzela' is included.
This trumpet-like horn gained fame during the recent FIFA World Cup that we hosted here in South Africa.
The reaction towards the 'vuvuzela' and its blaring sound can vary from adoration to distaste.Most soccer fans love the instrument.While some people loathe it.Whatever the reactions,the 'vuvu' has now made South Africa famous.
Wherever you - Mzansi citizens - go in the English speaking world,when they ask you where you are from,tell them you are from the land of the 'vuvuzela'.And if they don't know where that is,refer them to the Oxford English Dictionary.
"Halala Vuvuzela!"

* Our 800m lady world champion - Caster Semenya - back to doing what she does best.After being cleared by the IAAF earlier this year to race again,tonight she will be taking part in a 800m contest in Berlin.
We are genuinely happy for Ms Semenya.Her time away from athletics - while the IAAF investigates claims that she may not be completeley female - could not have been a pleasant experience.
In the end we can assume - now that she has been allowed back - sanity prevailed in the IAAF corridors.
"It's good to see you back Caster."

* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 2

This week I took my 'door to door' selling thing to our 'bo-mshayeli'(taxi drivers).I started next to the Tshiawelo flats here next to my 'kasi'.The taxis to town(Johannesburg) queue here after the morning 'rush hour is over.

The strategy to sell the FGM concept first,i.e. before presenting the Ts ,did not yield anything last week at the Protea Point complex.This time I decided not to say anything about what the FGM is.I approached the taxi drivers the way someone who sells socks,for example,would approach them.Bo-mshayeli would then have to buy based on whether they liked how the Ts looked or not.

Some drivers told me 'no,but thanks'.Others said I had come at the wrong time of the month.
Others still were very encouraging.They would tell me to try again next time and to never give up.This latter group - I must admit - gave me the energy to keep going;to try the next driver.

In the end though, I still didn't sell one FGM t-shirt.
So,did this mean that the FGM Ts do not even register on the 'looks' scale?

Next week is another day.Something has to give at some stage.

Scott 'Dilbert' Adams' Success, The Start of the Local Premier Soccer League Soccer Season, And 'On The FGM T's Sales Front - Part 1'.

* Learning - through the Jose Silva free online course - that Scott Adams,who is the creator of the popular 'Dilbert' cartoon strip,used affirmations to achieve his great succes as a cartoonist.The 'Dilbert' strip is one of the most syndicated strips.It is mostly about 'going ons' in an office-work enviroment.
To 'affirm' is to basically state - in a sentence form - your desire and then to repeat this sentence daily until your desire becomes a reality.You have to repeat your affirmation irrespective of what your reality is as you start to do it.
Adams first tried affirmations to get closer to a lady he fancied.When the technique worked in this instance he then applied it to pass a tough University entrance exam for his MBA studies.Here he incredibly got the exact mark - 94% - he was affirming.And ofcourse the reason why he is now rich and famous as a cartoonist is because he affirmed it also.
For us the revelation here was someone who used a motivational technique - affirmations - to achieve success 'outside' of the motivational field, so to speak.It is very rare to hear a motivational speaker saying they used one of their techniques to - for example - become the best tennis player in the world.Most of the time they use them do well in the same field of motivating people.Whereas Scott Adams used a motivational technique to achieve worldly success.
In the final analysis we can therefore conclude that motivational techniques - be they visualization,hypnosis,affirmations - can be used to achieve success in other areas.For example,I could start affirming : 'I am the President of South Africa'.And this will surely come to pass just as night follows day.

* Our local soccer season finally kicking off this past Saturday.Between now and the time Supersport FC won the league it feels like almost a decade had gone by.The sense of a big gap between the seasons ofcourse being the result of the FIFA World Cup.
The season curtain raiser - The Telkom Charity Cup - started things on Saturday.Kaizer Chiefs going on to win it on penalties against Orlando Pirates.
This re-starting of soccer here in Mzansi helping to alleviate some of the withdrawal symptoms for the true fans after the high of the World Cup.

* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 1

Having exhausted all my leads - a list of freinds,ex-colleagues,family members,ex-girlfriends etc - I now faced the prospect of cold calling in an attempt to sell more Feel Good Movement t-shirts.
From the start I was aware that selling to strangers was going to be difficult.I mean this group of potential t-shirt buyers had no obligation to buy from me.They didn't know me from a bar of soap.

And so started my door to door selling.I started here in my 'kasi' - Protea North.I went to the shops at our complex - Protea Point.I started my sales presentations by explaining our mission in the Feel Good Movement.And this being to raise the positive energy levels in the country,and in the world,by writing and talking about the positive experiences around us.
After this quick backround I would then take out an FGM 'T' from my bag and say we are selling these to help spread the word about our message.
While people liked our idea of spreading the message of 'a focus on positive experiences',this did not seem to be enough to make them to part with their money to buy a 'T'.In my going around the 13 or so shops in the complex I did not sell even one FGM 'T'.
And we said we wanted to sell 47 million Ts?

But the 'struggle' must and will continue.This is a journey of a thousand miles.And we have taken our first step.

Having Faith,Danny Jordaan Moving Up in the World, And "So You Think You Can Dance?" Being Back.

* Being reminded about what it means to have faith.Local actress - Zukisa Matola ,who has appeared in the Generations soap,and many other TV productions - had a few words to say about faith.She was quoted in the MOVE magazine of 14th July 2010.She said:

".....Faith is when you set your mind on something and believe that
it will happen.The important part about faith is what you do while
waiting for your dreams to come true.You need to draw strength from
the Word of God until something happens in your life.I used to ignore
this scripture.I would believe in God for a short period and when things
didn't happen at the time I wanted them to,I would start doubting Him.
But I have learnt that you need to believe in God for things you haven't
seen yet."

This reminder on how to have faith being timely for us here in The FGM.Things - like our Feel Good
Workshops for example - are taking time to get off the ground.These are trying times.And during such times it is easy to lose faith in one's dream.It is easy to wonder if it will ever happen.But as Ms Matola above has indicated,one must continue to believe in one's dream despite the current hard times.The idea is to never,ever give up.

* The news that Danny Jordaan - the SA FIFA Local Organizing Committee CEO - has been appointed to FIFA's inspection team.This is a six man team that is highly influential .Their job is to assess the readiness of all the countries bidding to host the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups.
After visiting the bidding countries this team will compile a report that FIFA will use in deciding on the hosts of these two World Cups.
We are just happy that Mr Jordaan has singled out for a seat in the inpecting team.This is - in a way - FIFA's acknowledgement that he did a splendid job in heading the team that successfully organised and hosted the recent FIFA Worl Cup here in South Africa.
We want to say 'nice one' to Mr Jordaan and here is hoping that even bigger things happen to you while you are there at FIFA.Maybe even the Presidency of the world body one day perhaps?Who can tell?

* One of the best reality progammes ever to be flighted by our public broacaster - the SABC - making a comeback.This past Saturday the dance reality show - "So You Think Yo Can Dance?" -
came back for its second season.It is on SABC 1 at 18.30 every Saturday.
We love this show because it is entertaining and inspiring.The different dance styles and the accompying music make for gripping television.But even better for all the dreamers out there,is to see all those hopefuls try their luck at winning the 1st prize.Needles to say, some of these dancers are not good enough to win this contest,but these guys are not lacking in self-belief.They still stood in those long lines to audition for a place in the show.And this - really - is the way to go in life.We must give our dreams the best shot,irrespective of what armchair critics are saying.

The Fantastic Way South Africa Hosted the FIFA World Cup, Spain's Win of the Same, And Madiba's Birthday.

* By all accounts South Africa doing a splendid job in hosting the FIFA World Cup.
Whether it is FIFA itself,or the many soccer fans who came to watch the games,everybody is raving about how well the tournament was organised.
The President of FIFA - Mr Sepp Blatter - gave us 9/10 for the hosting of the tournament.The soccer lovers who came to watch the games promised to come to these shores again to tour.
What can we say?
A special,special 'big up' to the LOC CEO - Danny Jordaan - and his whole team for making this World Cup such a success.A 'big up' too to our country's leaders - including our three Nobel laureates of Archbishop Tutu,Mr F W De Klerk and Mr Nelson Mandela - who brought us the World Cup by making the trip to Switzerland way back in 2004 to add weight to our bid.

Now for the other 'biggie' on the sporting front - the Olympic Games.We are ready.

* The Spanish team coming up trumps in the World Cup Final against The Netherlands last week Sunday.Spain defeated the Dutch by 1-0 in extra time.
For soccer purists this win by Spain was heartening.Spain play the game the beautiful way.Watching them move the ball from the backline,through the midfield,then on to the strikers who then make an attempt at goal, is delightful.It is like watching a chess game.An intriguing one at that,bacause the opponents will then put all of their men behind the ball to defend against this wave after wave of a Spanish attack.Like this, it then becomes just a matter of time before Spain scores and then goes on to win the game.This is exactly how it panned out against the Dutch in this Final.It was also the same story against Germany in the semi-finals, and against Portugal in the quarter-finals.
And ofcourse this Spanish way of playing - possession football with short passes - is modelled on the Barcelona FC style.Barcelona have turned this way of playing into an art form.

"Nice one Spain.Nice one."

* The fact that it is Nelson Mandela's birthday today.
Our former President is 92 years old today.It is not only his birthday today but it is also Mandela Day internationally.On this day each of us is urged to spend atleast 67 minutes of our day 'giving back' to our various communities in one way or another.
We wish to add our voice to the many birthday wishes and say:

"A Happy Birthday to you Madiba.May you not only live long,but live
long healthily.May your day - Mandela Day - galvanise the world and make
the giving of one's time to the community a worldwide phenomenon."

Feeling Good with FNB Knowledge Centre, Spain Going Through to the FIFA World Cup Final, And Germany Getting Something Atleast.

* Doing a Feel Good Workshop for FNB Knowledge Centre staff this past Thursday.
On their recent 2-day breakaway at the Ngwenya Country Escape,FNB Knowledge Centre invited The FGM to come and show them what we are about.We duly went and did our 'thing'.And frankly I have never had so much fun in one afternoon in a long time.
To Liz Malebane,Stefanie Bruwer,Terry Havenga,Schalk Walters and your team,many many thanks for the opportunity you gave us.One day when the Feel Good Revolution has taken over,we will duly name streets after you guys.

* The Spanish national soccer team making it through to the FIFA World Cup Final.
Spain defeated Germany 1-0 in the second Worl Cup semi-final on Wednesday.We are delighted that Spain - who are currently the best exponents of how we love the game of football to be played - made it.Spain now has a chance to make their beautiful,passing game count where it really matters: in the most important game of the tournament.And we have no doubt that they will prevail over the Nethertherlands in tonight's Final.The energy of all the neutral fans will be fully behind them because we simply love the way they play the game.

"Viva La Roja!Viva!"

* Germany getting something atleast out of this World Cup.They got bronze medals for their 3rd place finish.This was after they beat Uruguay 3-2 yesterday in a 3rd place play-off match.
We know that they would have loved to be playing in tonight's Final.
But we are still happy for Germany nevertheless.They lit up this tournament with their attacking and high scoring football.In their 4-1 defeat of Australia,their 4-1 trashing of England and their 4-0 demolition of Argentina,they made everybody sit up and take notice.Being one of the youngest squads in this tournament,this German team had this carefree attitude in their play.These guys were enjoying themselves.And for us spectators their fast,running soccer was a lovely sight.
We want to say to the coach - Joachim Loew - and his team -:

"Thank you for the thrills."

Bafana Bafana Peaking in Time, Special World Cup Courts, And 'Behind Bars - Part 18'.

* Our national soccer team - Bafana Bafana - seeming to peak at the right time.
In their 1-0 win over Denmark yesterday they announced to Mzansi and the watching world that they are ready.They played excellently too.This win was timely in view of the fact that the World Cup is starting here in South Africa this coming Friday -11th June.
A win against European opposition and a fellow qualifier for the upcomimg FIFA World Cup can only be good for Bafana's self-confidance.
Thi win made it 12 games in a row without a loss for Bafana Bafana.Infact,Bafana have not lost a game since our coach Carlos Parreira came back from Brazil for a second spell as our national coach.
All in all Bafana are ready.And the country as a whole is ready too.
Let's do this thing.

* Our national government doing its best to make sure that World Cup is safe.
Special courts having been set up around the country to deal with crime arising out our hosting of the World Cup.These courts are to deal specufically with crimes committed against our visitors.They will also deal with crime committed by the very same tourists.
Having dedicated World Cup courts will help to speed up the prosecution of offenders during this period.It will also free up the normal courts for normal cases.
We say anything and everything must be done to make our visitors safe.

* BEHIND BARS - PART 18
Monday continued:
After leaving the 'enclosure' I did not go straight to court.I first went into another waiting room right next to the court.Here I waited some more.I found a few guys also waiting there.These guys seemed to be calm about this whole thing.I was a nervous wreck.Discussing our respective cases amongst ourselves and our chances of being released on bail,however, did help to calm me down a little.
What also helped was me noticing - as we were ushered into this room - that our magistrate is white.I am not casting doubt on all our black magistrates,but I had heard enough stories of unfairness in the courts where they were presiding to be worried.My whole arrest in itself - where a civil matter was conveniently turned into criminal matter - had been authorised by a black prosecutor.

After a few minutes in this room I was called out to appear in court.I emerged into a packed Court 2.I made out familiar faces in the gallery.Neighbours and friends had come to hear the outcome of our case.I took the stand together with my sister.After a few statements from the state prosecutor and a few questions from the magistrate our case was postponed for further investigations and we were released on bail.
Hearing that were were going home was just unbelievable.I could not believe it.I could not believe that the forces that managed to ochestrate my arrest so well had failed to send me to 'Sun City' prison.
A bigger and more powerful being is out there indeed.He is there to make sure that when man has failed his fellow man he can still administer fairness in his own mysterious ways.

Walking out of court with my sister into a beautiful summer morning was a delirious moment.The feelings I had were indescribable.I was delighted .Iwas grateful.I was all emotions.
As we left the court precinct I met again the police officer who had assured me that I will be 'ok' in Court 2.I could have hugged the man out joy.He had been spot on.I expressed my gratitude for his words of encouragement.

My sister and I could not wait to arrive home and surprise our mother.She had decided not to come to court for our appearance.It would have been too much for her to see both her children on the court stand.

World Cup Teams Starting to Land, The Blue Bulls' 2nd Bite of Soweto, And 'Behind Bars - Part 17'.

* The World Cup national soccer teams starting to arrive in Mzansi.
This week - on Wednesday - Australia will be the first team to arrive.Brazil is expexted to
be here on Thursday.Denmark and Argentina are expected on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
If we - the people of Mzansi - ever needed any further convincing that the World Cup is here these landings of the actual players,as opposed to fans,should do it for us.
We extend our warmest welcome to the cream of world footballers and their respective fans.

"Sekunjalo."

* The Blue Bulls rugby team winning their Super 14 Final in Soweto.
The Bulls yesterday defeated the Western Stormers by 25-17 points at the Orlando Stadium.
This win by the Blue Bulls was fine.Congratulations to them.
But for us residents of Soweto the real joy came from seeing our white compatriots coming to 'ekasi' to watch a sports game.The Bulls and their mainly white fans were coming to Soweto for the second time nogal.They also played their Super 14 semi-final game at the same stadium.
These two peacefull visits to a township have hopefully banished forever the myth that the townships are dangerous places and are therefore not to be visited.The scenes of white Bulls fans hanging out with Soweto residents before and after the rugby game were some of the most moving.This free mingling of black and white was a South Africa bo-Mandela envisioned way back when they started their long road to freedom.

* BEHIND BARS - PART 17
Monday continued:
Up until now we still did not know in which court we were going to be appearing.The courts are numbered from 1 to 14.Apparently the lower numbered courts(1-4) are better because the magistrates here are more sympathetic.Whereas the higher numbered ones - bo 9-14 - are rumoured to be unfriendly.
As we arrived at the courts I remember asking one of the police officers we found there how I can know in which court I will be appearing.He first asked what it is I have allegedly done.On telling him that I was in for tresspassing he said I will be appearing in court 2.He added that I will be 'ok' in that court.I was hugely relieved on hearing this.These words of encouragement from the officer were very comforting indeed in view of the fact that the plan was for me not to be 'ok' but to end up in 'Sun City'.'This Man' who had instigated our unprocedural arrest had told my mother this as a fact.

In this moving from detention cells to the courts I was still with my cellmate -'E'.In our new waiting place we heard that it was possible we could spend the whole day waiting there.That our names could only be called up as late as 3pm,despite our arriving at the courts as early as 9am.The prospect of another long wait to know our fate was depressing.The four nights we spent inside waiting were long enough as far as I was concerned.
But we were fortunate.Our names were called up as early as 10am.'E' was the first to be called up.As we said our goodbyes we promised to keep in touch.My name was called out about 30 minutes later.
Leaving that packed enclosure was a truly liberating experience.

Support for Benny McCarthy, Favourite Police Officers Going Up, And 'Behind Bars - Part 16'.

* The calls from most local coaches for national team striker - Benny McCarthy - to be included in the final 23 man Bafana Bafana squad.The coaches believe that Benny can help Bafana Bafana score more goals.The goal scoring department is where Bafana are found most wanting.
These calls for Benny to be included in the World Cup squad are made despite the fact that he is not featuring regularly in his own team - West Ham United - in the English Premier League.He also appears to be a bit overweight.
Statistically speaking,though, Benny appears to be our best bet for scoring goals in this World Cup.He is the top goal scorer for the national side.And he has also scored in all the World Cups in which South Africa has appeared.
So we also add our voices for him to be included in the final World Cup squad.The current striking force has shown what it can do.We now want to see if Benny can add to the tally of goals.Goals are much needed for our progression to the second round.

* Meeting again one of the police officers who looked after us while I was in detention.Mr Mlondobozi was one the really nice officers.
I 'bumped' into him in the corridors of the Protea Police station.Needless to say,we were both very happy to see each other.He asked how my case went.In turn I asked what's up with the 'private' dress.He said he was now a detective.He now no longer has to wear a police uniform.When we first met he was actually still a constable.
I was delighted to see that something good has happened to 'our man' since we last saw each other.He had moved up.

* BEHIND BARS - PART 16
Monday continued:
The police van took us from the detention cells to a holding enclosure next to the Protea Magistrates Courts.Here we were to wait for our cases to be called up in the various courts.
In this enclosure we got to mix with prisoners from 'Sun City'(JHB Prison) itself.It was also their turn to appear in court today.The numbers back in the detention cells were small in comparison.In here there were lots of us.And space once again was not enough.We stood very close to each other.
For me this felt closest to the actual prison conditions.As I looked around I noticed that indeed there were many different types of prisoners.I became curious about what some of the 'non-prisoner-lookalikes' had done to end up 'inside'.But then I recalled an ex-prisoner once telling me that 'inside' you will find priests,lawyers etc.
What also struck me was that most of the people in this enclosure were relatively young.I estimated most of them were born between 1985 and 1990.If this was indeed a fair reflection of the population in our prisons this surely can't be good for the future of our country.Something needs to be done about the fact that our youth are going astray.

Chelsea FC's Historic Double,Barcelona's FC's 2nd In a Row,And 'Behind Bars - Part 15'

* Chelsea Football Club in England winning a 'double' in the English F A Premier League for the first time in the club's history.Chelsea won the English FA Cup yesterday by beating Portsmoth FC by 1-0.Last week they wrapped up the Premier League by pipping Manchester United to the post.The FA Cup plus the Premier League is usually refered to as a 'double'.To win these two trophies in one season is considered a big achievement by any club.
This bit of history making by Chelsea FC made us feel good here in the FGM.Chelsea is one the teams we admire in the England.We love how the owner - Mr Abramovich - has created this cosmopolitan side since he bought the club.
A pleasing footnote in this triumphant Chelsea team being the fact that the winning goal in the F A Cup Final was scored by Didier Drogbar who is from the Ivory Coast and is one of Africa's best exports.

* Barcelona FC - our other favourite football team in Europe - winning the Premier League in Spain for the second consecutive year.
The Barca coach - Pep Guardiola - now having a 100% record as far as La Liga is concerned.In his two years as coach of a La Liga side(Barcelona) he has won the the league in both seasons.This season Barcelona won the La Liga with the highest number ever of accumulated league points - 99.
Our wish was for Barca to make more history by becoming the first European club side to defend the Champion's League trophy.With their brand of thrilling and entertaining football one never tires of watching them play.But ofcourse they became unstuck against Inter Milan in the semi-finals.
We would,nevertheless,still choose to follow Barcelona over any other club side in Europe.Maybe even in the world.

* BEHIND BARS - PART 15
Monday morning:
'D' day finally arrived.Our chance to appear in court was here at last.

After breakfast we waited with baited breath to be called out.
While we did not know what was going to be the exact outcome of our court appearance,we were excited about the prospect of going to the outside world.Some of us had been inside for four straight nights.And this was a long time for someone who was new to the experience.

From our cell we could hear the police officer calling out names as he moved from cell to cell.In a few minutes he arrived at our cell.My name was the first to be called out.After a momentary and tense silence he called out my cellmate - 'D'.In those few seconds during which he was shaffling his papers looking for D's name we both held our breath,not wanting to think that he may not be leaving the holding cells today.

We then left in a group with other detainees to go and collect our belongings(shoelaces,cellphones etc) at the office where we were checked in.After all the formalities of 'checking out' were done we were herded into a police van that was to take us to court.
In this ride to court in a police van I was reminded of the 'Sun City' van that normally transports prisoners to and from courts.Like this - in a van - I felt like a true 'Sun City' resident.My current mode of transport was a far cry from the comfortable police private car that came to fetch me on the night of my arrest.

The Return of 'WHEN WE WERE BLACK',Cheaper Megabytes,And 'Behind Bars - Part 14'

* The TV drama series 'When we were Black' being back on our screens.It is screened on SABC 1 on Thursdays at 8.30pm.
Yes,it is a repeat.But repeats of this quality are always,always welcome.
This series is mainly about our recent dark past here in South Africa.But it is not just about apartheid,it is also about township life during this period of the 70s.I like how it covers the different strands of life in a typical township.You have your freedom fighters,bo-Modise.Then young lovers like bo-Fistos whose lives revolve just around being in love and his passion for the planetary system.You also have the 'small time tsotsi' element,who take out their frustration with the 'system'on fellow township residents.
In this past Thursday's episode I was really blown away by how 'umfundisi' did his bit to conscientise his congregation about taking action.He said there is a 'promised land' waiting for the people of Mzansi and they now have to 'take action' to get to this land.This analogy was totally out there.
The acting in here is sometimes so mesmerising you just don't want an episode to end.
The director and creator of this series - Khalo Matabane - has done a superb job in this recreation of our past.

"May you continue to entertain and make us think ntate Matabane."

* The movement towards cheaper internet gaining momentum.The country's two biggest network providers - MTN and Vodacom - suddenly announcing cheaper deals for their subscibers who use the internet.MTN's radio advert says something about one surfing(in their underwear) the internet the whole day for only R50.While Vodacom's print advert promised up to 60% of free megabytes for each category of megs bought.For example,if one buys 20 megs for R28 you get an additional 10 megs for free.
This trend towards more affordable internet can only be good.

* BEHIND BARS - Part 14
Sunday continued:
Today was going to be definitely our last day at the Protea Police Station detention cells.
If for some reason one is not released on bail tomorrow when we appear in court one is not coming back here.If you are remanded in custody you await your next court date in 'Sun City'(Johannesburg Prison).Needless to say,this is the fate none of us wished for.

As we bid this place goodbye and pray for a positive outcome in court tomorrow,I wanted to thank the community here for making our stay bearable.

The police officers:
Ntate Mlondobozi:"For your genuine concern for the wellbeing of detainees."

Ntate Baloyi :"For your sense of fairness.Your attempts to hook us up with the
station commander when we had grievances was highly apprreciated."

Ntate Shirindza :"For those nice little touches.Like treating my female cousins really well
when they came to visit us."

Captain Mathe and all the other senoir lady officers:"They way you went around the cells to lend a sympathetic ear to detainees after you 'clocked' in.This motherly touch really helped."

Our next door(adjacent left) cellmate:"I never got to know your name my brother,but your running commentary on everything around us and your singing provided a much need soundtrack to our sometimes lonely existence."

My two cellmates - 'E' and 'D':"It was pleasure sharing a cell with you guys.To you 'E' in
particular,with whom I have been from the beginning.Hope to see you guys again under much better
circustances."

I may have been in detention,but the 'peeps' above made it really memorable -in a good way - for me.

South African Flags Everywhere,A Beautiful Version Of the 'Shout' Song,And 'Behind Bars - Part 13'

* The appearance - almost suddenly - of our national flag everywhere.Our flag is being displayed by Mzansi citizens in increasing numbers.And this is all good.It is like we have all just woken up to the beauty not only of our flag,but to the beauty of our country.
The wearing of the flag on cars on our roads is my favourite sight.If it is not the flag itself pinned on some part of a car,it is the side mirror covers that MINI SA pioneerd.
All in all it looks like the 'Raise The Flag' campaign - initiated by companies like bo-MINI -is going well.When the world comes to visit in June it will find a country united.And not just united,but united behind our national soccer team - Bafana Bafana.
There are now efforts to link this raising of our flag initiative to that of the learning of all the words of our national anthem.
All of these efforts to make us to be proud of our country are very commendable indeed.

* South African musicians recording one of the better versions of the old Tears For Fears song 'SHOUT'.Be it the singing on the song or the rapping on it,it is all done excellently.On this SA version I got to personally appreciate how powerful and 'consciousness raising' the 'Shout' lyrics are.
This re-doing of 'Shout' here in SA is part of bigger initiative by SA musicians to raise awareness about crime in the country.The musicians - plus other SA celebrities - are urging us 'blow the whistle' on instances of crime being planned that we know of.
We are also encouraged to help raise funds towards projects that will help to fight crime.We can do this by downloading this SA 'Shout' version by sending an sms('Shout') to this number 33335.This sms will cost you R20,which will go to the Shout Foundation that will oversee these crime fighting projects.
We want to say 'nice one' to musicians Danny K and Kabelo who came up with this 'Shout' idea.

* BEHIND BARS - PART 13
Sunday continued:
This was the day we started hearing a lot about the 'S' place.The 'S' place is 'Sun City' - the notorious Johannesburg Prison in the south of Johannesburg.If it was not form one's cellmates it was from cells next door.On one hand we were told that the prison culture has changed.That the conditions there were not as harsh as they used to be.But on another hand one would hear a detainee from one cell - who presumably has been to 'Sun City' - threatening another in an adjoining cell like this:

"Wena clever ngizokuthola e Sun City."

As first time detainees not exactly sure how our court appearance tomorrow will go we listened to these 'S' place tales intently.

From the exchange between detainees above I got to learn what is the worst crime in the prisoners' eyes.This is the crime prisoners are most ashammed of.And this is sexual assault against women.Or rape, in other words.The guy being threatened above had told all and sundry that the 'threatener' had been arrested for rape.The latter had then 'lost it'.While he was making the threats above he also similarly told all and sundry that he has no problem in getting girls.

Great Help from the People of Orlando East,KAYA FM's 'Line Up' Revamp,And 'Behind Bars - Part 12'

* The realization that one can never get completely lost while visiting Orlando East.Orlando East(O/E) is one the oldest areas of the bigger Soweto township.
Last Saturday I decided to take a chance in trying to find a place(Pinkies Bakery) located in O/E.I did not have the exact address of the bakery.All I knew was that it was somewhere in Orlando East.I needed to urgently dropp off some FGM t-shirts at this particular bakery.
Under normal circumstances I would not have attempted this 'finding' for fear of not succeeding.But
we have an FGM Ts target(47 Mill) to meet.There is no time, or opportunity,to waste.So I went.

Enquiries about the whereabouts of Pinkies Bakery at the Bara Taxi rank did not yield much.At this stage I could have still turned back.But I decided to soldier on.It was better to give up after having been to Orlando East itself.
As if picking up on my positive mindset about finding my place,I got my first clue while in the taxi to O/E from the Bara Taxi rank.A gentleman fellow passenger said that he has never heard Pinkies Bakery but the best he can do for me is to show me where to get off in order ask around.This would be an area with a lot of shops.Atleast one of the shop assistants would know where Pinkies Bakery was.His line of reasoning made perfect sense.I thanked this gentleman as I got off at his suggested
bustop.It was at the first circle along the main taxi route going into O/E from Bara.
But almost every shop assistant there,plus the shoppers,had never heard of Pinkies Bakery.My heart was starting to sink.I then decided to ask for the whereabouts of any bakery in Orlando East.My thinking was that a bakery would atleast know about the competition in the area.
On my way to this other bakery I passed a house with a small hand-written sign outside that said 'Re etsa Likuku'.I decided to rather go in there and ask,instead of going all the way to that other pointed out bakery.This house turned out to be a home-based bakery of sorts.It was owned by a lady called Lindi.And Ausi Lindi knew exactly where Pinkies Bakery was.She said it was behind a TOTAL garage(filling station) further back along the very same taxi route we had used to come into O/E.
And indeed this is where I found Pinkies Bakery.
I was overjoyed.My 'stab' in the dark had payed off.It did take some perseverence on my part though,which was matched, ofcourse,by the great,great help from the people of Orlando East.

"Thanks to all of you Orlando East citizens I happened to ask for directions.
Much appreciated bo-mme le bo-ntate."

* The recent changes in Kaya FM's line that threw up some nice surprises.Kaya FM is one of the regional radio stations broadcasting to the Johannesburg area.
Firstly,my favourite programme on Kaya FM - Nicky B's "WORLD SHOW" - has been moved to a more accessible slot of 6 to 10pm(from the previous 10pm-1am slot).In this show we travel the world musically,including music from our own African continent.
Secondly,some of the newly introduced shows are proving to be good.For example,the new sports oriented show from 3pm to 5pm hosted by Jeff Moloi.Besides the 'sports and music' content of this show, I love how sometimes it becomes a 'free for all'.The news reader, the traffic lady and sports bulletin guys all chip in on whatever sport topic is being discussed.This team seems to be having such fun.
Thirdly,some old hands in the radio broadcasting field - like bo-Bob Mabena - have been brought back.He is on, on weekends, between 2pm amd 6pm.
Finally,I am loving how jazzish the music has become on Sundays.Sunday is definitely the day to stay tuned to Kaya FM all day.The music on this day is totally out there.

* BEHIND BARS - PART 12
Sunday continued:
Today my 3rd cellmate - 'D' - left the building.He had come in only yesterday.Today he became a
free man.His positive attitude and hard work(in working 'our' cellphone) paid off at last.
'D' had somehow managed to marshall people on his side of the family and those on his 'in laws' side to work on his cause to be set free.The result was that the very wife who had him arrested ended up paying the R2500 required by the lawyer for his bail application.

This 'kissing and making up' between 'D' and his wife under these circumstances highlighted an
amusing phenomenon I observed while locked up with guys whose better halves had them arrested.
When they arrive in the cell they always go:

"I don't want her anymore.I am going to divorce her."

But after one night or so behind bars they are on the phone frantically pleading with the very same wives,in an attempt to make peace.They would be asking the spouses to please drop the charges.
A night or two behind bars "eku hlephula intsango" it would seem.

Last Minute FIFA World Cup Ticket Sales,BIG NUZ's Big Night at the MTN SAMAs,And 'Behind Bars - Part 11'

* The start this week(on Thursday) of the over the counter sale of the FIFA World Cup tickets.
It is a phase called 'last minute sales',which means everything must go.
This latest way of selling the World Cup tickets is much simpler for football fans and this must be
welcomed.One simply goes to an FNB branch,or selected Shopprite supermarkets,pays in cash for a ticket and there and then their seat is confirmed.Unlike the old way of applying first and then waiting for a reply from FIFA.
This 'pay and get right away' is more or less how we buy our soccer tickets for local games.It is no wonder some of the FNB branches were mobbed when this phase started on Thursday.
But all in all kudos to FIFA for adapting to local conditions.This over the counter sale
of World Cup tickets is a apparently first for FIFA.
With around 500,000 tickets made available for this phase we urge Mzansi citizens to go out
and secure their seats for this first FIFA World Cup on African soil.

* A huge night for KZN kwaito group - BIG NUZ - at the SAMAS(South African Music Awards)
last night.Big Nuz walked away with the much coveted award of 'Record of The Year' for their
kwaito hit 'Mlilo'.
I was happy for these guys.Last year they came close in this category.'Mlilo' is a damn fine song.It is kwaito - a form of local dance music that combines house music beats with loca(vernacular) rap lyrics - at its best.When it starts to play you just want to shake it on the dance floor.
With 'Mlilo' Big Nuz proved that kwaito is indeed alive and well.They say as much in their video of
the song.
Big Nuz also won 'Best Kwaito' album and 'Album of The Year' for their album - 'Undisputed' - in which 'Mlilo' is featured.

* BEHIND BARS - PART 11
Sunday morning:
Finally this day arrived.Today was the eve of our court appearance.Sundays' arrival was
like a dream come true.From now onwards we just had to count 24 hours and Monday would
be here.Then we would know our fate.

In the meantime, though, life behind bars on a Sunday continued.
My reading material changed this morning.I put aside my books because my mother at home had
forwarded the weekly Sunday Times newspaper that we subscribe to.Together with my two cellmates we all went through this newspaper.

As it happened this particular issue of the Sunday Times was commemorating the release of
Nelson Mandela 20 years ago.It was full of articles about that momentous event in the history
of our country.Needless to say,reading about the freeing of Mandela after 27 years behind bars was
highly uplifting and inspiring.We may have only been in here for just 4 days but it felt like a very
long time indeed.Mandelas' eventual release made us look forward to our own freedom soon.

Calls For Calm After Eugene Terre'Blanche's Murder,Inspiration from the Poem - 'Right Now',And 'Behind Bars - Part 10'

* Appeals for calm from both sides - black and white - in the wake of the murder of
Eugene Terre Blanche.Terre Blanche was the leader of the AWB - a white ultra-right
political organization.He was allegedly killed by his two black farm employees.
This murder of 'ET' - he was commonly known - could have easily been viewed by his AWB supporters
as political,and therefore to be used as an excuse to avenge their leaders' death.
This political motive for the killing angle having been made stronger,ofcourse, by the recent revival of the public singing of the struggle song -"Shoot the Boer" - by ANC Youth League President,Julius Malema.
Fortunately,the few calls for reprisals immediately after the news of the death quickly died
down.It would seem the many calls for calm heads were indeed heeded.

"This is the way to go South Africa."

* Some lines from a poem that lit up my week.These were contained in the poem - "Right Now" - by
Ralph Marston(sourced from DailyMotivator.com).
In this poem Marston talks about appreciating the 'precious now' instead of worrying about
what the future holds.For example,he says we must marvell at the beauty of just being alive.
As he puts it:

"Right now,any anxiety you may have about the future
is only an illusion.
Let it go.
The best thing you can do for the future is to live with
everything you have in the present.
Right now,you are in a position to create real,
Lasting positive value for the world in which you live.
How do you do that?

* BEHIND BARS - PART 10
Saturday continued:
On this our(with my cellmate 'D') 3rd day behind bars we were starting to get to know some
of our fellow detainees in neighbuoring cells.We also got to like some police officers.
On that first full day 'inside' I must admit that the goings on in the cells was confusing.I just
remember seeing groups of detainees being let out and then another group being let in.
We had no idea who was in there?And for how long?
But by today we knew that our neighbours on the left were kind of permanent for the weekend
like us.And we got know about them because one of them never stopped calling out to the
other detainees across.For some reason he never used their names.He always used the townships from they came.He would shout:
"Yase Zola,ephi Yase Dlamini".If he is not doing the "Yase" thing he would be singing.He
was never quiet.

There were our two chefs also.They were 'coloured' guys who,it turned out,were also blood
brothers.I was fascinated by how both siblings ended up in jail at the same time for different
offences.
These guys were very friendly to us.A request for an extra slice of bread here,or there,was always
granted even though stricly speaking the rules did allow it.

We got close to one particular police officer.We shall call him 'M'.This gentleman had this Unbelievable 'TC' for detainees.If we needed a newspaper from outside we would give him money and he would buy it on his way to work the next day.Sometimes he would go as far as phoning a family member for you while he is out there.

With this growing familiarity with people and the cell conditions we were honestly starting to feel comfortable.I personally felt that in a worst case scenario of ending up being convicted,under our prevailing conditions in the detention cells,I could easily survive a stay behind bars.

Support from Neighbours and Friends,A Good Week on the FGM Ts Sales Front,And 'Behind Bars - Part 9'

* Our neighbours and family friends standing by us when our house situation
deteriorated.
This past Tuesday the house we were staying in was literally 'invaded' by This Man
and his 10(or so) cohorts.This is the same man who somehow had not only convinced
the Chief Prosecutor at the Protea Magistrates Court to sign a warrant for our arrest,but
had also made the police to carry out this warrant( see Behind Bars series).
In this latest instance he had obtained a letter/order from the same Chief Prosecutor above
to move into into the disputed house,despite the fact that we were still staying in there.
And this This Man had done with relish on Tuesday.
We had no choice but to move out.There was no way we were going to live with This Man
and his 10 friends in the same house.His moving in - with the blessing of the Chief
Prosecutor - whilst we were still inside the house was nothing but a constructive eviction.
And this eviction took place even before our tresspassing case had run its course.

On behalf of my family I would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our neighbours
Bo-Sis Joyce,Sis Daniswa,Ausi Marcia,Ausi Nono,Ausi Mmatseleng,Ayanda,Zandile,
Thabo et al for being there for us on that fateful Tuesday night when hooliganism
threatened to overwhelm us.
May we also give a special,special thanks to my mothers' friend and
fellow church-gower Sis Xoliswa Ngewu and his
family(Bo-Gogo Dunira,Patricia Hungwe,Amanda Ngewu and Palesa Mayosi)
for opening their house and their hearts to us when we had nowhere else to go.

"Much,much love to you Sis Xoliswa."

* One of the better weeks on the FGM T-shirt sales front.It was a week when
we bounced back from a one and half month slump in sales.
This week we sold 7 t-shirts in total, and in the process went past the 1/2 ton - 50 - mark in sales.
This 7 Ts in 7 days being a record of sorts for us.
So,how many Ts to go before we hit our 47 million target?

starts with the first step.The 50 Ts sold so far is our first step.

* BEHIND BARS - PART 9
Saturday continued:
Meeting our lawyer and hearing that he was here to try and secure our release
lifted our spirits greatly.I started picturing myself at home already.

This attempt to get us out once again failed,however.The investigating officer in
our case was not on duty today.When he was phoned to let him know of our intention
to apply for bail he opposed it.And he gave no reasons for doing so.This was very strange indeed.
Even stranger was the fact that he had taken the docket home with him.This latter
fact meant that even if the on-duty police officers wanted to facilitate this bail application they could
not because the docket was not there.
At this stage - to me - it started to smell rotten.Our arrest in itself was dubbious,but to
take the docket home and then oppose bail showed a clear strategy to keep us behind
bars at all costs.Moreover,my mother had also just informed me that This Man - who
had us arrested - kept telling her - while I was 'inside' - that I won't be coming back home.
He told her that I am going to end up in 'Sun City' - the notorious Johannesburg Prison.
This Man seemed so sure of this.It was like somebody had assured him of this.

Not to get bail was very deflating.But like all unfairly incarcerated people before
I felt that fighting for our right to retain our house was worth all this pain.
At some stage this dark cloud has to, and must, lift.

Bafana Bafana's Training Camp in Brazil,A Visit to C.A.L.S Offices at Wits,And 'Behind Bars - Part 8'

* By all accounts the Bafana Bafana training camp in the land of samba football - Brazil -
going well.Our national football team has not lost a game since they arrived there.They have
won 5 games and drawn 2 so far.
For us supporters this is damn good news.It means we are slowly but surely getting ready for FIFA's showpiece in June.
Bo-'kea tseba' may say we must temper our excitement because the opposition in Brazil was
not that strong.Yes,the opposition may have mostly been individual premier league teams
as opposed to national sides,but we must remember this is Brazil.They are the 5-time World
Champions.There is always something our national side can learn even from club sides there.
Our coach is now even starting to sound very optimistic about our chances of going through to the 2nd round.
Ofcourse here in the FGM we have always been positive about our national team making it to the 2nd round.Otherwise why would we start a campaign like "Bafana Bafana For 2ND Round - FIFA 2010".
We know these things.

* A visit I made to the Centre for Applied Legal Studies(C.A.L.S) office at the WITS University campus in Braamfontein that left me feeling good indeed.
I went there to seek some legal advice about our house issue.C.A.L.S has been in the news recently because of their excellent work in helping inner city dwellers with housing matters.
The way I was received and treated at the C.A.L.S offices simply took my breath away.The lady
at the reception desk - Annaline - was courteous at all times while I waited for one of their lawyers
to be see me.And the lawyer himself - Teboho Mosikili - when I got to see him eventually,was
unbelievably patient in hearing me out.All of this 'T-C' was given to someone who did not even
have an appointment.I went there to just to enquire about their services,not expecting to
actually see one of their lawyers right away.
I left C.A.L.S offices feeling like a Very Important Person.
May C.A.L.S and its staff continue to grow from strength to strength.

"Thank you Annaline and Teboho."

* BEHIND BARS - PART 8
Saturday continued:
Today I got to learn that my mother on the 'outside' had gotten a lawyer to try and bail
me out.This bail attempt had not been successful yesterday.They were going to try again
today.

A police officer came to our cell to let me know that I have some visitors.It was my mother,
my sister and our lawyer.I was delighted to see my family again.
This joy was shortlived however.They told me that my sister had since been arrested too.She
had spent Friday night behind bars.
I was horrified.When was this nightmare ever going to end,I wondered.
I now recalled that when I was officially charged on Friday morning the investigating officer
had shown me the arrest warrant.It had been authorised and signed by the Protea Magistrate Court Chief Prosecutor.In one chilling sentence she had written: " Arrest every member of the family in that house."And this would have included - in addition to my sister and me - my elderly mother(74 yrs),my
4yr old nephew and my 6yr old niece.
On the Thursday of my arrest my sister had not been at home.But on Friday she was not so lucky.
Thinking that,surely,it cannot get any worse that it was,she had innocently come to the Police Station
holding cells to bring me those 3 books I had requested from home.On seeing her the investing officer
so maar told her she was now under arrest too.It was left to my sisters' friend to go and deliver
more of these sad news to my mother at home.

My mother had been lucky on that fatefull Thursday.She was saved by the fact that my nephew
and niece were sleeping already when the police arrived.The arresting officer - who is also the
investigating officer - had at first insisted that she must come with us,but my mother stood her
ground, saying that she cannot leave the sleeping kids all by themselves.
My mother escaping arrest in such a fortuitous way was enough to make a man a believer.And
her lucky escape was deservedly so.She is the one who is always urging us to come closer to
the Lord.

The KFC Outlet in Highpoint,Capitec Bank 'Representing',And 'Behind Bars - Part 7'

* Extremely friendly staff at a Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet at the Highpoint complex
in Hillbrow.What made me sit up was the fact that I experienced this friendliness on three
consecutive days that I went there.It was not a once off thing on a particular day.This consistency
convinced me that it was genuine.
I have been to other KFC outlets before.I have been to other fast food outlets also.But the cheerfulness of the Highpoint outlet employees was incomparable.
Just as an example.On my third day there I raised the point that my coleslaw of the previous
day was not that fresh.The lady behind the counter told me that I should have brought it
back.At the same time she assured me that today's coleslaw was as fresh as it gets.Which it
was indeed.As a way of making sure the branch manager later came over to my table to
ask how my coleslaw was today.
My many thanks for this memorable service go to Ausi Nokuthula(behind the counter and the
lady who give me a taste if this service on my first day there),Mme Rebecca(on the floor),and Petrus(the branch manager).

* Capitec - one of our local banks - raising the flag for the country internationally.
It was reported in the Sunday Times(Business Times - 14/03/10) that Credit Suisse had identified
Capitec Bank as one of 27 brands to watch in the future globally.Capitec was the only local bank noted as such.
This singling out of Capitec by Credit Suisse - an international financial services group - was
surprising because Capitec is not really one of the big banks locally.
We want to say 'big up' to Capitec.South Africa is proud of you guys.

* BEHIND BARS - PART 7
Saturday continued:
This morning we were also joined by a 3rd cellmate.We shall call him 'D'.
'D' had had an altercation with his wife and somehow in this slanging match one had
pushed the other.His wife had then called the police,who were very quick to come and
arrest him.Interestingly,'D' was a member of a law enforcement agency also.He worked for the
JMPD(Johannesburg Metro Police Department).

'D' brought a refreshing positive mindset to our cell.Having spent almost two days behind
bars, 'E' and me had kind of resigned ourselves to our fate - which was staying in there until
Monday when we would be appearing in court.
But from the time of his arrival - which was around 8am - 'D' had declared that he was getting out
of there that day.He told us that he is going to phone his lawyer to come and bail him out.
To show that he meant it he started working on our 'smuggled' cellphone.He phoned his sister
for some airtime.He then phoned his lawyers - Legalwise.They promised to send over a lawyer in
the next hour or so.But no lawyer showed up the whole day.'D' ended up spending the night behind
bars.
Needless to say,'D' was highly upset with this shoddy service from his lawyers.He swore that he
was going to demand back his money - the total of all the monthly instalments that Legalwise debited from his account for the service.

I was disappointed too that D's wish to leave on the same day of his arrival did not happen.Because,really, his upbeat outlook on arrival had energised us all.I wanted something to come out of this positive energy of his.

8 Million Sketches Project,'6 Colours To Stand By' Campaign,And 'Behind Bars - Part 6'

* A hugely ambitious project by an artist named Jason Polan.Jason lives in New York
city.He has undertaken to draw a sketch of each person living in this city.All 8 million (or
so) of them.
This was reported in an article - "New York's Sketchy Details" - by James Bone that appeared
in the Sunday Times( 14/03/2008) newspaper's 'Lifestyle' supplement.
Since Jason started this project in 2008 he has done close to 10 000 sketches.And far from being daunted by this project he seems to be loving it.He was quoted as saying:

"It's a project I am getting enjoyment of as I
go along.I know I am not going to finish
but I am willing to work on it forever."

I found Jason's project highly inspiring.I saw some similarities to our own big project
here in The FGM.Our project is to make sure that 47 million South Africans each have
atleast one FGM t-shirt.The 47 million figure comes from the estimated number of the
South African population last year when we started this project.
To Mr Jason Polan we would like to say:

"Big up on your big dream my man.
And,yes,you will finish it.Because dreams do come true."

* A drive by the car manufacturer - MINI South Africa - to get Mzansi citizens excited
about our South Africaness in the the lead up to start of FIFA's World Cup 2010 here in June.
MINI have decided to focus on our national flag as symbol of this campaign.They have
named their campaign "6 Colours To Stand By".These are the colours of red,white,green,
yellow,blue and black that make up our national flag.
The company is giving away free side mirror covers made in the colours of our national flag
to SA car owners at all their dealerships, whilst stocks last.
I must admit that reading about this campaign in their print advert gave me goose bumps.A mental image of all South Africans showing our patriotism by wearing our flag,so to speak,was moving.
Let's all go and get our side mirror covers and - as MINI's campaign slogan goes -

"...raise the flag like it's never been raised before."

* BEHIND BARS - PART 6
Saturday morning:
I had thought that going without food the whole day yesterday was worst part of fasting.It
was not.And so I realized this morning.I was woken up - as early as 5am - by an unusually loud
heartbeat.When I put my hand on my chest I could feel my heart beating.A heartbeat is
normally a silent thing.Unless one is really frightened.But there was no reason for me to
feel fearful.I chucked it all up to my 'all day' fasting of yesterday.
At first I tried ignore this audible heartbeat by going back to sleep.But the heartbeat didn't allow me fall sleep again.

I then decided to get up and go outside into the courtyard.This walking outside was even more
discomforting.I suddenly felt dizzy and headachy and nauseous.It felt like I was going to faint anytime.And for me being so sick that I have to be taken to the hospital was not an option.My
cellmate - 'E' - had told me that if one had to see a doctor it would be at the Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital and that one would go there in leg chains.I knew too many of my 'kasi' lady neighbours who
worked at Bara.I did not cherish the prospect of them seeing me in chains like a bona fide convict.I was not a convict.I still had to appear in court for the magistrate to hear my case.

Once outside I drank some cold water and felt a little better.I sat down.Standing seemed to make the
dizziness worse.While I sat I did some deep breathing exercises.With more fresh air the headache got
better.
I remained seated there in that darkish hour of 5am until around 7am when it became light enough
for me to continue reading one of my books.

When I think about it now,the book where I got the fasting idea from did say something about such side effects.The author had said it was the result of the body having to suddenly get rid of all the accumulated toxins.
Despite the 'rough' situation I had just experienced above I had no regrets about going on this fast.I felt cleaner inside and just a little bit healthier.

100 Days to SA's Big Party, Gifts to our Government from Kentucky Fried Chicken, And 'Behind Bars - Part 5'

* This past Tuesday(02/03/10) marking exactly 100 days before the start of the FIFA
World Cup here in Mzansi.This milestone being celebrated with various activities around the
country.One of these being an official 100 DAYS COUNTDOWN to June 11.
For us Mzansi citizens these are exciting times.We are excited that an event that we have been
waiting for for so long is now just around the corner.We are thrilled that the necessary infrastructure
(like stadiums etc) is in place.
A small worry at the back of our minds may be whether we can host the best FIFA World Cup to date.Like with the Olympic Games, there is always pressure on the latest host country to deliver a tournament that surpasses the previous one.In our case it will be to do a tournament better than the FIFA 2006 one held in Germany.
And,yes,we can do it.

* Reading that the Kentucky Fried Chicken(SA) company has given R200 000 in cash
to the City of Joburg municipality to help it to fix the potholes on our roads.This report
(by Zweli Mokgata) was carried by THE TIMES newspaper of 04/03/10.KFC made this
donation to the Johannesburg Roads Agency.
I was bowled over when I read this.It is very rare for the private business sector to give - to
give hard cash for that matter - to the government.
This 'Count me in.I want to make Jozi a better place' gesture by KFC must be applauded.

* BEHIND BARS - PART 5
Friday continued:
I am jolted from my reading by
"Food guys.Supper is ready guys."
But it is still broad daylight.When I ask our chefs for the time they say it is around 4pm.
Indeed supper behind bars is at 4pm ladies and gentlemen.
I am still on my fasting tip.But I note that on the menu is 'papa' with bean soup.For some
reason I had expected something meaty in the final meal of the day.But not behind bars it seems.
We are supposed to get our protein from the bean soup.
I must admit though that the small portions and the absence of meat make the meals behind bars a dieters' dream.So,all you ladies out there battling with the bulge,try spending some time 'inside'.By the end of you stay you will be nice and slim.

In the early evening some 'house' music starts drifting in through the opening at the top of
the cell courtyard.It sounded like someone was having a party.All the 'happening' local house
tracks - like Bongi Dube's 'I Don't Want to Hang Around', and Big Nuz's 'Mlilo' - were coming
through.The music was from the police barracks on the police station premises where some police
officers stay.This was a Friday afterall,our officers needed to let off some steam.
This bit of happy 'party' music brought some welcome relief.But it also made our incarceration even
more painful.It was the fact that life on the 'outside' was continuing
while we wasting away 'inside'.

At the end of my first full day behind bars I was most proud of the fact that I had successfuly
fasted for the whole day.It was not as difficult as I had thought it would be.

Supersport United FC's Hatrick,Nataniel's Frank Advice,And 'Behind Bars - Part 4'

* Supersport United Football Club winning its 3rd Premier League title.
I just love this 'Matsatsantsa ase Pitori' (as Supersport is affectionately known) success
story.Once again they won the title against the run of play, so to speak.At the beginning of
the 2009/2010 season the usual suspects of the big three of Kaizer Chiefs,Orlando Pirates and
Mamelodi Sundowns were punted as potential league winners.These three not only have a big
support base - which helps if you want to win things - but they also have the financial muscle
to buy the best players.
But once again Mr Gavin Hunt - the Supersport coach - and his charges have showed us up all.

"To you Mr Hunt and your players we say congratulations are in order.May you
keep winning until you get that call up to the national team."

* An interview with the artist and stage performer - Nataniel - that appeared in the
Sunday Times newspaper of two weeks ago(14/02/10).I was particularly blown away by the
advice he had for SA's up and coming artists and performers on how to succeed in this field.As far as I am concerned his advice is also applicable to starting entrepreneurs.
Nataniel went:

"If you work(hard),you will succeed.People are scared of work....Many
South African artists are lazy.I see these so-called celebrities in borrowed
clothes attending all these opening nights - they are all over the social pages -
and I think,'When do you get the time to do it?'Success comes down to
stamina and endurance.My first 10 years (in show business) was a living hell.
I would cut up duvets to make costumes.But I never gave up,even though the
one-man cabaret thing was not the 'in' at the time.I was determined that I would
do it or die trying.I did play the organ during cremations to pay for my studies,but
I never waitered.So,my advice is : if you have a dream,don't get pregnant,don't
get a day job,just do that thing that you're good at....A real job is just a distraction
and it makes someone else rich.It's my 24th year on stage,and my family still can't
believe I make a living from this."

What more can we say Nataniel.Thanks for that awesome,awesome advice.

* BEHIND BARS - PART 4
Friday continued:
After lunch time seemed to drag.I discovered a 2nd great need while behind bars.This was
the need for reading material.This morning I had asked the police officer handling my case
to give me something to read.He seemed to think this was a big joke.He asked me if I mean that
he must buy me a newspaper.But on our detention 'check in' form it is clearly stated that
in addition to the right to adequate accomodation,the right to nutrition etc etc, detainees have a right
to be provided with reading material.All of these are to be provided at the expense of the state.

In the absence of reading material from the state I ended up sending an SOS for reading material
to my mother at home.I asked her to forward me three books that I was busy reading before my
arrest.These three titles were TNT - THE POWER WITHIN YOU by Claude Bristol and Herold
Sherman,THE POWER OF ALPHA THINKING by Jess Stearn,and 101 WAYS TO SELL MORE - OF ANYTHING TO ANYONE by Andrew Griffiths.
While these books would help me to pass the time while 'inside',I expected a little bit more from them.
Especially from the first two(Bristol & Sherman, and Stearn).I not only expected these two to
help come to terms with my incarceration,but I also expected them to get me out here.This would
through using the power of my mind.

I had not expected my three books to arrive on the same day of my request.But they did.An officer
came over to deliver them in just over an hour after my request.I suppose this quick delivery was one of the benefits of being locked up in your own 'kasi'.Home is just around the corner.
Needless to say,I was over the moon when I got the books.It felt like I had won a jackpot of sorts.
Now, they could keep me in here as long as they want.

Centuries Galore from Hashim Amla,SABC's Campaign for Haiti,And 'Behind Bars - Part 3'

* The great performance of Proteas' batsman Hashim Amla in the recent two test
series against the Indian national cricket team.These tests were played in India.
Hashim managed to score 3 consecutive centuries.This means he scored more than 100 runs
each time he went out to bat in all the innings that he played.These three batting feats
included a double century score of 253 in the first test match which helped South Africa win this
match.The other two scores that followed in the second test were 114 and 123 respectively.
It was just unfortunate that our national cricket team ended up drawing the series after they
narrowly lost the last test match to the Indians.
But the drawing of the series should not detract from Hashim Amla's outstanding batting.He was praised by even the Indians themselves.They noted his calmness and focus while at the crease.

We would like to send our 'big ups' to Hashim Amla:

"You truly 'represented' my man."

* Our public broadcaster - the SABC - joining the efforts around the world to
raise funds to help rebuild Haiti.The SABC initiated its own campaign called 'HELP
REBUILD HAITI'.This campaign was kicked off last month with a live telethon where various presenters of its TV programmes took pledges for cash from the public.This campaign to raise funds for Haiti is still running.You can sms the word HAITI to 38722.Each sms will cost you R10.
Any and every initiatitive that is taken to relieve the suffering in Haiti after the recent
devastating earthquake there has be commended.

* BEHIND BARS - PART 3

Friday continued:
After 'L' left us,'E' and me chatted a bit.We both got to know more about each other's
case.He had been arrested for an unlawful use of someone's car.This could be termed 'theft'.
But again - as in my tresspassing case - it was not as simple as it sounded.The owner of the car was actually his wife.

In this 'talk' we also quickly established some ground rules for 'living together'.There was the
sensitive issue of using the loo.There are two toilets.And these are 'open affairs'.They are not enclosed.One is inside the sleeping quarters - the bathroom-sized cell.The other one is in the courtyard,next to which there is a shower also.
We agreed that for a 'No 1' we could use either of the toilets.But for a 'NO 2' we must use the outside
one.And in this event of a 'No 2',the party not doing it has to move inside the 'sleeping quarters' and while in here close the door.This is to give the other party some privacy.

In all this talking we kept wondering what time it was on the 'outside' .The need to know the time is
one of the great needs while'inside'.With no cellphones or watches to guide us there is a sense of being disoriented. Each time a police officer came by we wanted to know from him what time it was.
In the absence of an officer we were guided by the food trolley.As it appears now while we are chatting we know that the time must 12 noon.Our lunch is made up of four buttrered slices of bread with soup.Again I decide to forgo this meal.By now I had decided that I am going to go on a fast for the whole day.I will drink water at each meal time.I remembered reading somewhere that going on a water fast is good for one's health.It is an excellent way to detoxify your body physically and spiritually,apparently.
Being 'inside' has given me a chance to get back to health,I told myself.And up until lunch time the
fasting was going well indeed.And for this I was thankful.

Lovers' Day,State of the Nation Speech,And 'Behind Bars - Part 2'

* It being St Valentines this past Sunday(14/02/10).I always say we must do all we can to increase the love we have for one another in the country.And if this love is directed at the fairer sex,it is even better.
The reason why there is so much strife in the world today is because of lack of love for our fellow
human beings.This is in my honest and humble opinion.
Let's have more days in which we can express more love towards one another,I say.
Here are a few suggestions of my own:

1.'Give a Stranger a Hugg' Day
2.'Greet Your Nasty Neighbour with a Smile' Day
3.'Make Peace with all Your Exes' Day

Here is hoping that all you ladies were spoiled rotten on Sunday.

* A truly commemorative state of the nation speech by President Jacob Zuma last
Thursday(11/02/10).In thanking the various persons and parties that helped to liberate this
country,the President rolled back the years.And this was in keeping with the theme of this
year's speech which to celebrate the release from jail of former President - Nelson Mandela - 20 years
ago.
What I found particularly interesting in this speech was the lesser well known fact of the roles played by some members of the previous National Party government in the release of Nelson Mandela and the rest of the political prisoners.For example,I didn't know that it was actually P W Botha - the then head of state - who initiated the discussions about the possible release of political prisoners.I had always thought that all the changes came with F W de Klerk,who took over from Botha.
President Zuma also acknowledged the role played by the former Nationa Party Justice Minister - Kobie Coetzee in the subsequent discussions about this release of political prisoners.

* BEHIND BARS - PART 2
Friday(05/02/10) Morning.
______________________

We are woken up around 5.00 am.Sleep last night having been fitful.More so because the lights in the cells stay on the whole night.
This 'waking us up' by the night shift police officers is so that they can do one last check on detainees before knocking off at 6.00 am.They are checking to to see if we all still alive.If one is fast asleep when they arrive they prod your body to make sure you are still breathing.
After these checks are done the two inner doors are left unlocked.It is only the outer 3rd steel gate that is locked.One could get up and stretch in the courtyard if you wanted to.But none of us felt like it.We just wanted to catch up on sleep.
The final wake up is around 8.00 am when the breakfast trolly passes by.Our chefs are convits who are
about to finish their sentences.As they pass they shout:"Breakfast guys!Breakfast guys".
On the menu is buttered bread(2 slices),tea in a paper cup and some porridge.
I decide to skip this meal.I do this because I do not want to be dissapointed by the taste of the food.
One of our rights as detainees - we were informed last night - is to be brought before a court of law
within 48 hours of being arrested.As the morning starts the three of us are hopeful that we are going to appear in court.At this first appearance we were certain of being released on bail.
But this was not to be.Atleast for the two of us.In my case when I asked why I am not appearing in court today the investigating officer said something to the effect that last night he had to go and get sleep too.He could not finish the paperwork then.It was the same story with my other cellmate,whom I shall call 'E'.Since it was a Friday and courts dont open on weekends,our court appearance would only be on Monday.This news was a big blow to our upbeat mood of this morning.The thought of spending a whole weekend 'inside' was unbearable.
Our 3rd cellmate,whom I shall call 'L', was lucky however.After breakfast he was called out and he never came back.He got released,we later learned.
To have your cellmate leave a cell for good is a cause for celebration.This permanent departure gives you hope that you might be the next to leave.

Today 20 Years Ago,An SMS from Mrs Essenelle Julius,And Stints Behind Bars

* Recalling the day that our former President - Nelson Mandela - was released from prison.
On 11th Feb 1990 the National Party government,led by Mr F W De Klerk,released Mr Mandela from
the Victor Vester prison.Mr Mandela had been behind bars for 27 years.
This release paved the way for our first democratic elections in 1994.
This week marks the 20th anniversary of that momentous event.
This release of Mr Mandela was one of those events that stays in ones memory forever.Like the assassination of SAPC leader - Chris Hani,or the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Centre twin towers,one remembers exactly where they were when they heard the news.
As a country we may still have many challenges,but Mzansi is in a much better place compared to 20
years ago.And for this we want to thank Mr Mandela and his comrades for their self-sacrifice in getting us to where we are today.
We want to thank Mr F W De klerk ,too, for having the courage to do the unthinkable at the time.

* A friend of the Feel Good Movement - Mrs Essenelle Julius - sending us an sms that simply blew me away.The message contained in here and its essence is what I would like to send out to all my friends who for some reason I have lost touch with.
Mrs Julius wrote:

"I live by faith and not by sight.So whether I see you
or not,talk to you or not,sms or not,I know that you
are still the same: a treasure worth keeping."

* The realization that GOD IS INDEED ALIVE AND WELL.
This past weekend the forces of evil,the forces of darkness,used the state machinery in the form of police to try and destroy me and my family.But 'angeke ba lunge' because my REEDEMER LIVES.
Despite their best efforts I am still here,alive,strong and 'kicking arse'.

Last week Thursday(04/02/10) I was arrested and put behind bars.I spent 4 nights locked up in the holding cells of the Protea Police Station.The charge was tresspassing.I was accused of tresspassing on a property that I had been staying in for past 20 years.
Needless to say,my arrest and subsequent 'lock up' were totally and completely unlawful.

BEHIND BARS - PART 1

On Thursday(04/02/10) evening, around 9.00pm, 6 police officers burst into our house.They said they had come to arrest a 'Thapelo'.I try to find out what the problem is.But I am waved away and ordered to come with them instead.Outside the house there are about 5 or 6 police cars waiting to ferry us.This large number of police cars and the 'noisiness' of the arrest creates quite a commotion in my street.
As we leave in this convoy my mother is left equally bewildered.
We then drive around Soweto collecting other persons who also had warrants of arrests.
As we drive I am still in a daze.I cannot believe that this is happening.I have actually been arrested and am going to be locked up.And for what?
By 11.00pm we are back at the Protea police station.We are then'checked in', so to speak.We are instructed to leave behind our cellphones,shoe laces,belts etc.Anything that can be used to harm oneself or another while inside the cells is taken away.These are put in a bag with ones's name and number on, and locked away.After this administration process is completed we are led to the holding cells.In here we are each given a sleeping sponge and two blankets.
We are put 3 in a cell.The 3 of us are on 'light' offences, we are told.I am relieved that there is a grouping system of sorts for cellmates.This is meant to seperate hardcore criminals from 'light offenders'.
Our cell is a more or less the size of a bathroom in a normal 3-bedroomed house.Where the bath would be is one concrete bed.So it is one person on the bed and the other two on the floor.These conditions are very squashed, if you ask me.
The police officer then locks up.There are about three doors in a cell that all have to be locked.
When the key turns on the last outer door we all painfully realize that this is it then.There is no going back.We are indeed spending a night in jail.
Sleep does not come easily that night.All of us are trying very hard to come to terms with our new circumstances.
Sleep comes eventually.But it is because our bodies are worn out physically not because we want.If we could, we would have stayed up all night.
As I fall asleep I feel good about the fact that I am still 'together',so to speak.I was glad that I have not 'broken down' completely due to this ordeal.

Two Good Wins on the Trot,The Adidas Giant Jersey Roadshow,And a Word or Two from Our Former Pres.

* The 6-2 drubbing of Swaziland by Bafana Bafana this past weekend was no fluke it would seem.They did almost as well against the Zimbabwen national soccer team on Tuesday.They beat the Zimbabwens 3-0 in their second friendly game in a week.
These two wins in a row by our boys were very encouraging indeed.A win is always good for the moral of the team.
The opposition may not have been that strong,especially Swaziland,but we should still applaud.If anything,for them starting to score goals.
The two good wins by Bafana came just in time for the campaign - "BAFANA BAFANA FOR THE 2ND ROUND - 2010" - that we initiated last week here in The FGM.Our campaign was given a boost.
And these are the kind of things(good performances) we want to highlight with our campaign.Through this campaign we want to work on Bafana Bafana's self-belief,saying to them::

"You have scored goals before;you have won by big margins before.There is no reason
why you can't do the same against Mexico,Uruguay, or even France."

* Learning of another campaign in support of our national soccer team - Bafana Bafana.
This campaign - called Unite Mzansi Unite - is being run by Adidas - the sport apparel company that makes the Bafana jersey.
Adidas has created a giant replica of the yellow Bafana Bafana jersey that is being transported around the country.South Africans of all ages are being encouraged to write a message of support for Bafana on this jersey and sign it.
We fully support this one more initiative to rally behind our national soccer team.As we approach that that crucial month of June - when FIFA's 2010 World Cup starts - Bafana need all the support they can get.

* A weighing in by our former President - Thabo Mbeki - on the Haitian situation.In an article entitled "We Must Do All We Can To Help The Island Safeguard It's Dignity", that appeared in The Times(24/1/2010) newspaper,Mr Mbeki lauded the efforts of the international community in helping the people of Haiti after that devastating earthquake.More importantly though,Mr Mbeki went on to enlighten us more about the history of this island.He wrote that in 1804 Haiti became the first black republic after the slaves rebelled against their European captors.In the ensuing battle the slaves managed to defeat the army of France - a then European powerhouse.With this victory, and the subsequent creation of the republic, the slaves made Africans proud everywhere.And this feat should still make us hold our heads high even today.

Moving Farewells,A simpler Way To Buy FIFA World Cup Tickets,The 'Bafana Bafana For The 2nd Round' Campaign

It was the kind that made it hard for a man to contain his emotions.A big 'thank you' to all those who were in attendance.A special,special 'ta' to the following:

* A plan being made to make the ticket buying process of the 2010 FIFA World Cup tickets easier.The CEO of the LOC - Mr Danny Jordaan - has confirmed this himself.He had earlier expressed his concern about the slow uptake of the tickets for the Bafana Bafana games by the local fans.A simpler way to purchase tickets would help to increase the sale of Bafana Bafana games tickets,he said.This simpler way to acquire tickets will start in April.
An easier way to acquire tickets would definitely help with the sales.I have witnessed first hand the frustrations of ticket buyers with the current process of buying tickets.The whole thing of first applying and then waiting for a reply from FIFA is cumbersome.And it does discourage people from rushing to buy tickets.The computicket method where when you pay for the ticket your seat is definitely reserved is better.This is the method we know and love.And this is the method that the LOC wants use from April.
We want to applaud this planned change in methods of selling tickets.Everything possible must be done help fill the stadiums,especially for the Bafana Bafana games.

* Here in the Feel Good Movement, us deciding to start a campaign called 'BAFANA BAFANA FOR THE 2ND ROUND - FIFA 2010'.Through this campaign - which we will spearhead - we want to drum up support for the national soccer team firstly.But most importantly we want Bafana Bafana - through our encouragement - to confound the skeptics and reach the 2nd round.A lot of the football pundits don't seem to give us a chance as far as reaching the 2nd round is concerned.
We may be in a tough group - with two former World Champions in Uruguay and France,and one of the giants of Latin American soccer(Mexico) - but we just have to believe in ourselves.
There is also the matter of history.All previous hosts of FIFA's World Cup have all managed to reach the 2nd round at the least.South Africa is not going to be the first host not achieve this.Through this campaign we want to make sure that South Africa - like all previous hosts - reaches the 2nd round.If they do go beyond the 2nd round,this will be a bonus.
The campaign will - in true Feel Good Movement style - highlight the good points about the national team.We will sing their praises at every opportunity,on every platform we get.The idea here is to build their self-confidence and self-belief.These two character traits are the starting point of all achievement.
We wil give more details about this campaign as we move forward.
For now we say:

"SAY 'YES' TO BAFANA BAFANA.
SAY 'YES' TO THEM REACHING THE 2ND ROUND."

World Behind Haiti,LOC CEO - Danny Jordaan - Adamant,And The Original 'TP'

* The world uniting in offering relief- both material and otherwise- to the people of Haiti in the wake of the earthquake that hit their country this past Tuesday.This quake- measuring 7.0 - is said to be one of the largest ever.And by all accounts it really decimated Haiti.

Offers of help have come from all over the world.The most high prifile of these being that of the two US ex-Presidents-Mr Clinton and Mr Bush.They have promised to mobilise US citizens to open their wallets and contribute monetarily towards the Haiti relief efforts.

South Africa's Gift of The Givers organization has already dispatched its first team to Haiti to lend a helping hand as they always do in such situations.Big 'ups' to Dr Imtiaz Sooliman and his Gift of The Givers team.

And a massive,massive 'high five' to a world united behind Haiti.

* The CEO of the Local Organizing Committee for FIFA'S World Cup 2010-Mr Danny Jordaan- coming out strongly to say the World Cup to be held here in South Africa later this year will be safe.He made this assertion amid security fears around the World Cup, after the attack by armed gunmen on the Togolese football team in Angola.Angola is currently hosting the Africa Nations Cup soccer tournament.

Angola and South Africa are two different countries in Africa with two different political dynamics,he rightly said.Just like Greece- hosting the Euro soccer tournament - was a different country to Spain which suffered terror attacks before this soccer tournament.

It would be unfair to use the Angolan attacks to deduce that the World Cup in South Africa would be unsafe also.

Like Mr Jordaan - we the people of Mzansi - mantain that the World Cup will be safe.

Besides, the rebels responsible for the attack on the Togolese team bus have since apologised.They said they mistook this bus for an Angolan army convoy.

* The sweet menories of the music of soul singer Teddy Pendergrass.It was reported this week that he had passed away from colon cancer complications.

'TP' - as he was popularly known - was one of the main voices of the Philadelphia sound that was pioneered by the producers- Leon Huff and Kenneth Gamble.It was a type of soul music that was accompanied by ochestral sounds of strings and violins etc.And it was stirring music.

TP's classics starting from his time with the group- Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes - will be cherished forever by all soul music lovers.These included songs like "If You Don't Know Me By Now","Turn Off the LIghts","Life is a Song Worth Singing","It's So Good(When Loving Somebody and Somebody Loves You Back".I could go on and on.

" From one 'TP' to another:may you rest in peace my brother."

2010 - The Year for South Africa,Ms Gina Tripani's Essay,And Leaps of Faith

* The arrival of 2010 at last.We- the people of Mzansi- have been waiting for this year with bated breath since South Africa won the right to host FIFA's World Cup.
The world's eyes are on us from now onwards.This focus will intensify during the tournament itself between 11th June and 11th July.
Needless to say- as hosts - we must give our visitors a warm welcome when they do land here.
At the same time let us use all the oppportunities that will arise out of hosting such a big event.Be it a chance to make freinds with the world citizens or a chance to get a business idea off the ground.

"Whatever we do this year Mzansi people,let it be to show our country in the best possible light."

* A highly inspirational essay entitled "Productivity" by a lady called Gina Trapali.
This essay appears in a freely distributed ebook called "What Matters Now".In here various writers wax lyrical about what matters now, in their opinion.
Ms Trapani's essay was my favourite.She wrote:

" Getting things done is not the same as making thing happen.
You can:
.....reply to email
.....pay the bills
.....cross off to-dos.
.....fulfill your obligation.
.....repeat what you heard.
.....go with the flow.
.....anticipate roadblocks.
.....aim for 'good enough'.
OR
You can:
.....organize a community.
.....take a risk.
.....set ambitious goals.
.....give more than you take.
.....change perceptions.
.....forge a new path.
.....create possibility.
.....demand excellence.
Don't worry too much about getting things done.
Make things happen(instead)."

Indeed Ms Trapani.
If there is one resolution that we all should have on our list this year,it should be to make things happen in 2010.

* The decision - by 'yours truly' - to leave my 9-5 job with FNB as the year starts.This was not a decision taken lightly I must admit.
I am leaving to pursue a dream of doing motivational talks in township high schools,in assciation with corporate sponsors.
These motivational 'talks'- in the form of what we call Feel Good Workshops -are a continuation of the mission that I have already started with in this Feel Good Movement website.And that is to raise the positive energy levels in the country by highlighting the good and positive events happening in our lives.
The Feel Good Revolution is being taken on the road,ladies and gentlemen.
To FNB I would like to say:
"It has been a blast working here."
To my colleagues at The Glen branch I say:
"Thank you guys for your support.Thank you for giving me the
platform to practice my public speaking during our staff meetings."
To our customers:
" I am going to miss you all, ladies and gentlemen.

The Year That Was - 2009

The following 'feel good moments' that absolutely made my 2009.These are the happenings that make me say that this was a great year.Because of these, it was a joy to have been alive in 2009.

ON THE WORLD STAGE
___________________

1.The Barcelona Football Club winning the European Champions League Final.
In this game against Manchester the men from the city of Barcelona dazzled.The 2-0 score margin does not even begin to explain the artistry of the victory.Barcelona restored our faith in the beauty of the beautiful game.

2.U S President Barack Obama being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Here is a man- who has already done much to convince us that dreams do come true- being rightly rewarded by the Nobel Prize Committee for his promising start in helping the world get rid of nuclear weapons.

IN SOUTH AFRICA
________________

1.Our peaceful national elections earlier this year.
The acrimony at the ANC's leadership conference in December of 2008 thankfully
not spilling over into the 2009 elections.These are the elections that helped to entrench our democracy.After their successful conclusion we can happily call ourselves a mature democracy.

2.FIFA's 2010 World Cup Draw in Cape Town on December 4th.
The LOC putting up an impressive show of efficiency and Mzansi's technical know-how in this event.
We can only say: " Woza June 11 2010!Woza!S A is ready."

ON A PERSONAL NOTE

1.The arrival of first stock The Feel Good Movement t-shirts in August.
That Friday 28th, I will never ever forget.On this day one of my most cherished dreams came true. On the scale of 'big-ness' the FGM's t's arrival was on the
same level as the launch of this FGM website.And, believe it or not,this launch was also on the 28th day of the month(November 2008).

2.Doing my first public motivational speaking gig.
This talk took place at the Department of Education(JHB South) Principals thanksgiving function at the Mid Ennerdale Primary School.
This was an awesome experience for 'yours truly'.To get up and look at this packed hall and know that one has to deliver was was stomach-churning.
But I kept my nerve and got on with it.And I think I did well.

With those, here is hoping that there will be more and many
'feel good moments' for you and for me in 2010.
Let's start the 2nd decade of the millenium on an awesome note.
