The Love Shown To Fabrice Muamba

Football lover or not,you would have been moved, too,by the outpouring of support for Fabrice Muamba from the soccer world as a whole.Muamba is the Bolton Wanderers player who collapsed on the soccer pitch last Saturday(17th March) after suffering a heart attack. It was in an FA quarterfinal game against Tottenum Hotspur at White Heart Lane.

Fabrice was rushed to the London Chest Hospital where miraculously he was revived after his heart had stopped beating after the collapse. This is where he still is,in ICU.

From Manchester,Barcelona(and Madrid) to across the Atlantic in L A,football greats weighed in with their messages to Fabrice and his family, all saying he must get well soon.

This wave of support by the football community having started on the Saturday of this incident. After Fabrice collapsed in the first half of the game, the referee realized the seriousness of the matter and decided not only to stop the game but to abandon it altogether. The fans of both clubs departed the stadium without a complaint.

Next there was Sir Alex Ferguson(of Manchester United) wishing Fabrice a speedy recovery. Then there were the Barcelona players( Messi and Alves shown in a newspaper photo) wearing t-shirts written 'Fabrice! We are behind you'.Later still Mr Beckham from the L A Galaxy football team phoned the coach(Owen Coyle) of Fabrice's team(Bolton Wanderers) to offer his support.

For us here in Africa,Fabrice's recovery is of particular significance. He is the son of the soil after all.He was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo and lived there until he was 11 years when his parents fled the DRC to seek asylum in the United Kingdom.

The latest reports about his condition are that he has improved considerably since that fateful Saturday. He can recognize his family members and is even starting to say a few words.

We wish Fabrice well also.

This Derby is Very Much Alive

Fears that the local Soweto derby - between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates - was losing its fizz, were thankfully laid to rest yesterday.

In a very exciting (and heartbreaking, for some of us) game yesterday afternoon, the two Soweto soccer giants served up a thrilling match.

In a packed FNB stadium,Orlando Pirates quickly raced to a 3-0 lead even before the first 45 minutes were over. They boldly announced that today they wanted to vanquish their arch rivals. In this emphatic start, they were also telling all and sundry that the 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Santos this past Wednesday was now a distant memory.

For their part,Kaizer Chiefs did respond.Their two goals were not sufficient, however. It was a case of too little too late.Orlando Pirates eventually won 3-2.

Before yesterday's edition of this derby,a lot of soccer pundits had complained about the lack of excitement in recent derbies between the two.Was it even still a derby, they opined. For this they put forward a number of reasons. One of these, they said, was that today's players were not as skillful as the legendary Jomo Sono(wa Pirates) or Ace Ntsoelengoe(wa Chiefs). As a consequence today's derbies lacked the entertainment value. It is true that Jomo and Ace were exceptional players. But they operated in an era of less discipline on the soccer pitch. It was a time when players could still 'stand on a soccer ball' to please the crowd. An act which today would be viewed as frivolous and clownish.

After yesterday, these obituaries will now have to wait.

Well done to Pirates for this win.Big up to Chiefs,as well, for their contribution to a highly entertaining game.

'CLF' Is In The House

Who is 'CLF'?,you ask.Well, she(or is it a he?) is our 5th official FGM blog follower.

This week 'CLF' decided to make it public, ladies and gentlemen. He(or is it a she?) is that second
silhoutted figure in the 'Followers' space on our blog home page.

To show our appreciation we have decided to write an open letter to 'CLF'.

"Dear CLF,

Are you well?

We are fine here in sunny SA.

We love it that you have decided to come forward,so to speak. We love it a lot that you have decided that now was about time. You cannot even begin to imagine,CLF,what it does to our self-confidence when a blog reader decides to indicate that they like what we are doing.Showing up,as you did this week, could not have come at a better time also.It had been a while - almost a year now - since someone had last 'showed themselves'.

What a pity though,CLF,that we don't have full details about you. This lack of more info about you has left us with many unanswered questions. For example:

Are you female or male?(Not that we are looking.)

From which part of the world are you?(We know that our blog is read worldwide, but still....)

Broadly speaking, are you black or white?(You must excuse us here,we are South Africans afterall.)

Was your coming forward prompted by a particular post?(Not that it matters much, because we know that every post we put out rocks.)

And on a different note, what do you make of the changes on the blog since the start of the year?Things like the dropping of the 'feel good' poems.

I could go on and on,CLF.But for now I will leave it there.I shall await your answer,CLF.With bated breath,if I may add.

Stay well CLF.

Thapelo.
For The FGM."
