London Olympics,Here We Come

We come in the form of the South African national women's hockey team.

Marsha Marescia and the girls booked themselves a place in this year's London Olympic Games yesterday.They defeated the Indian women's hockey team 3 - 1 in the final of a qualifying tournament held in New Delhi,India.This tournament featured four other countries - Italy,Ukraine,Canada and Poland - in addition to South Africa and India.

After this win over India,the captain of the SA hockey team - Marsha - was quoted in the India Today newspaper(26th February) as saying that with the securing of an Olympic spot,a dream had finally become a reality for the team.And here in the FGM we should know all about dreams coming true.It is an amazing feeling.

One can assume that this second qualification for the same Olympic games - so to speak - by the SA women's hockey team tasted even sweeter.The women's team did qualify for the London Olympics in 2011 by the virtue of them being crowned African champions.But the South African Olympic association deemed the African hockey tournament not challenging enough.The association felt that our hockey team had not been properly tested.Hence our women's hockey team ending up in another - and second - qualifying tournament in New Delhi with the five other countries.

The SA women's hockey team 'making it',will no doubt serve as inspiration to our other Olympic sporting codes that still have to qualify for the games.

Captain fantastic - Ms Marescia - and her team mates are going to represent Mzansi well at the London Games,for sure!
